BUT THEN... everything changed. That's because yesterday our brand new LectroFan arrived. So ...last night, we plugged it in. Now I gotta say, this thing puts out some amazing sound. I mean, the LectroFan itself is"tiny" but the sound it produces is BIG, rich, sound with depth. Some of the fan settings, I could close my eyes and actually visualize a 1900's oscillating desk fan, or a huge industrial or factory ventilation fan. Remarkable. But for last night, I decided to try "white noise". I settled on setting 1, and it was like a waterfall or maybe the sound of a starship (?) whatever ... just a pleasant, all enveloping sound. Well, not only did I fall asleep - I stayed asleep - all the way till my alarm woke me up this morning. No dogs, no car, no loud people. What a relief!! In fact, I woke up so relaxed this morning that I decided to roll back over and promptly fell asleep for another hour until my wife got me up! Oh, and my wife? She only got up ONE time last night and she feel right back asleep. Tonight I'm going to try white noise setting 2 and see how that does, but I can hardly wait to catch up on more sleep.
By the way, my wife also suffers from really bad tinnitus. So she tried white noise number 10 (number 10 is the highest pitch white noise), and it has greatly alleviated her discomfort. In fact, it somehow seems to have changed the pitch of her tinnitus (at least temporarily) to a lower, more tolerable pitch in her one ear - and - her ringing has all but stopped for a number of hours in her other - and this has NEVER happened before. Now, we don't expect that to last and I've not read any other reviews where that's been reported, so if you have tinnitus please don't expect that to happen to you - it's possible her experience is unrelated to the Lectrofan BUT she's encouraged.
We got a "black" LectroFan and it looks quite nice actually. I almost bought a Marpac Dohm (it also has rave reviews) as I really like it's appearance, it's history and the fact it has an actual "fan" inside ... BUT .. I chose the LectroFan for the variety of sounds it can produce, and it's volume control, and I have no regrets.
Bottom line, LectroFan delivers. For us, it's delivered the best night of sleep we've enjoyed in a long time. And while it hasn't stopped the neighbor's dogs from barking, the loud cars, banging doors or hyper birds ... it has stopped us from having to listen to them. :)
The Marpac is mechanical with an operating fan; the Lectrofan is digital, without moving parts. Below is my comparison of the two.
Volume: The Marpac has two volume settings: Loud and Very Loud (even after placing it across the room, as the directions recommend). The two settings actually change the speed of the fan (fast and very fast). The LectroFan has a wide range of volume settings, so aside from this obvious benefit, you can also place it within easy reach to adjust the settings or quickly turn it off without getting out of bed. Volume is important, as it impacts your comfort level, and a wide range enables you to adjust it to block out almost any noise, or to fine tune it so that it blocks out exterior noise but still enables you to hear your child, fire alarm, your dog, or a break-in.
Sound: With the Marpac, you simply get the sound of the fan, which you may or may not like. Twisting the top down reduces the size of the openings the air blows out of, thereby changing the "pitch" of the sound, but I found that it mainly reduces the volume (which I still found to be too loud). With the LectroFan, there is a variety of different white noise sounds to choose from, and I had no problem finding one I like.
Size/Weight: The Marpac has a notably larger footprint and is heavier than the LectroFan, thereby taking up more space where it sits, and making it less convenient to travel with.
Lifespan: I don't know how long either will last, but because the Marpac is an actual fan with moving parts, it is prone to mechanical failure from wear and tear. Operating it with the top twisted down will logically reduce its lifespan, as reducing the openings makes the fan work harder to push the air out of smaller openings, and generates more heat.
Energy Use: I didn't do an energy analysis, but due to its mechanical operation, the Marpac should require more energy use, although the difference is subjective and may or may not be significant to you.
Additional Notes: The LectroFan was cheaper, although both units are overpriced for what they are. I also feel the LectroFan is more contemporary looking than the Marpac. A couple of reviewers stated their preference for a lighted panel to see in the dark (which neither unit has). However, I found both units by their design easy to adjust or turn on/off in the dark. However, if the unit is situated across the room, you may need supplemental lighting.
I absolutely love the LectroFan. It is not only smaller than the Marpac, but since it is digital sound rather than relying on an actual fan, there is absolutely no movement or rattling at any volume. The fact that I can select the fan or white noise sound that I prefer as well as easily change the volume makes this little machine ideal for my needs. I appreciate the fact that the sound stays constant at the setting that I select.
Not only does it not have any rattling to annoy me but it is soothing to my dogs too. There are feral animals that sometimes roam through our yard at night. I find that turning the volume up really does help my dogs ignore the intruders and not wake me up with their bark alerts. I am glad that I decided to make the switch from an actual fan noise to this digital sound machine.
