Dr. Ian Dunbar is one of the world's most respected experts on dog training and behavior.

He grew up on a farm in the English countryside training cows, chickens and yes, dogs using time-honored lure reward training techniques learned from his family.

He went on to receive his veterinary degree from the Royal Veterinary College at London University and his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.

In 1982, he designed and taught the world's very first off-leash puppy socialization and training classes – SIRIUS® Puppy Training. These puppy classes would go on to become immensely popular and imitated all around the world.

The success and popularity of these classes ultimately revolutionized the world of dog training by putting a much needed focus on puppyhood and easy, enjoyable, and effective methods, at a time when most training was boring and unpleasant.

Subsequently, Ian went on to create and develop the San Francisco SPCA's Animal Behavior Department, he started the American Kennel Club's Gazette "Behavior" column, which he wrote for seven years, and he designed and organized the K9 GAMES®.

In 1993, he founded the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. With over 5000 members in 48 countries, the APDT has grown to be the world's largest association of dog trainers.

He has authored numerous books and videos, including five seasons of Dogs with Dunbar, a popular television program in the UK. He has given over one thousand seminars and workshops around the world and has been instrumental in the rise of reward-based, fun and games, scientifically sound dog training methods.

Currently, his online courses, seminars, and workshops are available from DunbarAcademy.com

I run a small animal rescue organisation and am dealing with over 20 dogs on a daily basis. This book is very good for someone who is trying to understand their dog's behaviour towards them and towards other dogs. Much of it I have learned from experience, with the dogs being my teacher, but there were many other notes in this little book that made me stop and think,' Hmm, I didn't get that part right !'
When you are dealing one on one with a dog or maybe two dogs the advice is very good. For me dealing with multiple animals all the time it is at times difficult to isolate and train a dog on a one to one basis and follow exactly the advice given by Mr Dunbar. However, I do highly recommend this book. We as humans need to learn to understand our dogs body language and more often than not when we don't understand what the dog is trying to tell us, that is when the problems arise. Understanding is a two way street.

This is an excellent book on how dogs think and learn and; why they act the way they do. Ian Dunbar has written several good books on dogs and this is one of them.

This book has a lot of good information in it. Suggest close evaluation of content if you are buying for a child. May prove to be over the head of a younger child.

Great training tips, nice and positive, just how i like it. If i had to hurt my dog to train him i wouldnt do it. Ian dunbar is one of my fav trainers and hopefully shows in this book it is rarely the dog that cant do it, it is the trainer who cant train!

I liked it, it has a lot of great information. At times it goes into too much detail and can be a little outdated. Much has been learned since this book was written but much is still relevant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dog and Man, different beasts but animals just the same
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2013
Ian Dunbar is a wise man, and I suspect he could write a brilliant book titled Human Behavior, a Dog's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet just as easily as he did this one. I find myself dropping his name and thoughts into conversations on a wide range of subjects, most not dog related at all. A must for dog owners, sometimes the simplest truths are the hardest to recognise. Kindle editing could be tightened up a bit, and it ended a little too soon but a fascinating read just the same, and I have my dog's vet to thank for the referral.
