I love the main characters.
The funny names the writer comes up with for some of the characters in the stories adds to the enjoyment and are cleverly done.
I wish there were many more in this series.
I would recommend these books to anyone who likes a good mystery and has a sharp sense of humor.
This author should have left the dog references out and just written the mystery. Seems like he was just counting on the universal popularity of the golden retriever breed to sell books, when the dog actually had nothing much to do with the story.
Rochester is gifted with a great deal more ability to handle the human world than your average Golden Retriever. He recognizes clues to crimes, intuits when things are about to become dangerous for the humans in his life and, as a sideline, psychs out the complexities of canine agility competition in a single exposure. This might be insufferable except that he also shows all the outgoing goofiness of a year-old member of the breed.
Steve is 'gifted' with a great deal of ability to handle computers, an ability which accounts for his current status as a parolee. Some of the tension of the plot lies in the tug of war between his desire and ability to use his computer smarts on the side of the angels and the looming threat of being sent back to prison if he is caught.
A well-plotted, well-told mystery with the addition of some entertaining (and knowlegable) ventures into the worlds of canine sports and computer hacking. But don't go out and buy a little bundle of golden fluff and expect to rid the world of crime or walk away with an agility champion first time out.
