About the Author

Elliott Garber is a veterinarian and military officer currently assigned on active duty with a special operations command. He has lived in India, Egypt, Mozambique, and Italy and traveled to over 50 other countries around the world, including a recent deployment to Iraq. You can often find him under the water, up in the air, or out in the woods. Elliott lives with his wife and two young children in Coronado, California.

This is a short story truly worth reading.

I often think of the wonderful dogs who work in the Military, and I wonder what their lives are like; how respected they are, and how they're cared for when care is needed. This well-written, fast-paced tale--by an author with first-hand experience--fills in a lot of blanks. Solo, the canine hero in the story, is lost while under heavy fire. No one expects to ever see him again...

It's a short story, so I won't say more than that. Read it. You won't be disappointed.

Great story about our forgotten 4-legged Warriors

This might be a short story, but it tells you how much these forgotten 4 legged warriors are treated like their brothers in arms. So many people do not know how much these MWD's do for our military. Read the Commanders comments about Solo. "Good Dog? He's the best I've ever seen. You have any idea how many lives he's already saved with that nose of his?" So many of these outstanding warriors work unconditionally, doing their jobs on point for their handler, only for the love of a good pat, and to play with their Kong. And again, so many do not come back. What is sad is these 4-legged warriors are listed as "Equipment" and get no official recognition for their service. I had the pleasure of adopting one of these great soldiers and he is now an ambassador for the military working dog adoptions website. Helping to get the word out that these soldiers can be adopted after there military service. This was a great story. Looking forward to more like this.

exciting glimpse into an unfamiliar combat world

This story drew me into its world in a really fluid way. It does a great job crafting some compelling and unique characters including a working dog and an army veterinarian. Modern warfare is depicted here as a very interesting mix of technology, humans and dogs working seamlessly together. The author does a great job evoking the unfamiliar setting of a modern combat base. It feels very real. The story is told with a good balance of technical knowledge and quiet human drama that creates a very immersive reading experience.
