Have a relative spending time i hospital and convalescent home. She has always loved dogs. This will give her something to keep her occupied and quiet.

This is the second of Roger Caras' pair of books about most people's most familiar household companions, domestic felines and canines. For the title, the author picks up on the very very well-known phenomenal acuity and range of dogs' hearing. The book design is identical to that of "A Cat Is Watching," and in this book also, I love the line drawings featuring snippets of dog anatomy for each chapter heading. Chapter 12 describes and lists members of each (at the time of writing and publication, 1992) American Kennel Club-recognized groups of dogs: Terrier; Non-Sporting; Herding; Sporting; Hound; and Working. As someone who loves dogs but doesn't know them the way I almost instinctively "get" cats, I especially enjoyed and appreciated the history, anecdotes, and stories in the book. Similar to "A Cat Is Watching," this book give the reader a sense of what's it's like to live with dogs who adore you rather than with cats who demand to be worshiped. "A Dog Is Listening" fully is worth any animal lover's acquiring, reading, and re-reading.

Loved this book when I read it years ago, so I bought it for my young niece who just got her first dog. I’m awaiting her review!

First of all, the title is deceiving. "...The Way Some of Our Closest Friends View Us" was what attracted me to the book. Unfortunately, I found very little information about the way my dogs might view me. Caras covers more than just the "sight" sense. This book was a bit too academic and historical for my tastes. I wished there were more anecdotes and/or behavioral information. The pictures and photos were randomly scattered around and many of them didn't have captions.
While the history of dogs/wolves is interesting, it's not what I paid for.

Caras has written the best dog book I have ever read. In it he tells you about your best four legged buddy and the basics of how (s)he operates.

It is obvious that Roger Caras loves animals. Not just dogs, but all animals. So do I. This book provides tremendous insight into the history of dog owning, on how they became pets, how they react, act, in other words, how and why they do what they do.

I loved the descriptions of interaction between animals. So much of that I had the pleasure of observing myself. But put in words makes the book and my personal experiences that much sweeter.

This book is a perfect gift for anyone who owns a dog or plans to own a dog.

Book seems to be good in terms of quality for its price, have yet to read. Couldn't help noticing since I got 2 copies - one cover was of a glossy finish and one was matte. No biggie though, maybe just a different printer.
