We got this to compare with the Koehler method books we have. You can almost hear the Australian twang of Ross while reading! Great psychological insights into why dogs do what they do.

Dog Obedience Training by Ross Allan is an excellent book for anyone seeking serious advice on training their dog. It is clear, concise and easy to follow with a step by step process outlined for each exercise along with wonderful colour photos demonstrating the correct handling procedure. I have used Ross Allan's training methods on my own two dogs and have achieved the desired results when all other avenues have failed. The years of experience and dedication to dog obedience training by the author have produced what I consider to be the best book available for everyone from beginners to the more advanced dog handler. I have witnessed Ross Allan's methods work time and time again and thoroughly recommend this book to anyone in need of guidance with the training of their canine companion.

It was not the information I needed for a puppy, which was my fault. There were more highlights than I expected in the book. I am sure I will use it someday.

More balanced than P+ trainers would have you believe. There are some good techniques and tools in this book. Personally I think the more techniques you know, coupled with an understanding of the individual animal with which you are working provides the best avenue for a good relationship.

In 1972 Ross Allan was an Airforce Legend, the best of the best, a Top Gun, Dux in his field, and now this living legend quietly trains dogs in sunny Queensland "only an hour away from where last century this man made Airforce history". It almost sounds like a Hollywood Blockbuster and possibly one day, it might be because Ross Allan is as much part of Australian Airforce history as was William (Bill) Perrett the founding father of the RAAF Police Dog Mustering. This 'man', Ross Allan graced our industry and is without doubt, the best independent dog trainer Australia has ever seen.
Ross Allan's legacy will never again be repeated. Never before has the guts, determination and natural ability of one person been seen in any of Australia's Armed Forces, Police, Corrections, Security, or Customs. This magnificent 'man' has for many years been undersold.
All of Ross Allan's experience, techniques and methodolgy have been captured in his book 'Dog Obedience Training'. This book is the most significant tool you can own if you train dogs! Ross Allan, you are a true Australian icon and the Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) salutes you, a living legend...... Will you one day return to where it all began?
Your book has given a high profile to the mustering and dog training in this country. You are a true ambassador and master craftsman. Good luck my friend!

Dog Obedience Training by Ross Allan is an easy to read step by step training guide providing the reader with practical training and an insight into the canine physic. The book begins with a background into the Author and his family. It talks about his qualifications and experience which I found very important. The approach of the book is practical and in a sense 'obvious once you and your canine know how'. It teaches the reader to train their animal with praise, corrections, repetition, bonding and eye contact. I have found this book to be the most effective training tool for both myself and my German Shepherd Kayla. We are both much better for it and enjoy a greater bonding as a result.

I don't remember when I purchased this book but ran across it today so started to read it. I have a fair amount of experience in training dogs (search and rescue and therapy), though not as much as Mr. Allan claims to have. To be honest, I was a little shocked when I started reading about his forceful methods, so I looked to see how old this books is, expecting it to be much older than it is. Then I realized the title itself gives a hint of the attitude he takes toward dogs with his "Complete Authoritative Guide". He suggests you can tell a good trainer if they have previous experience in training for police, prisons, military, obedience competition or Schutzhund which seems to mirror is own personality. He also advoctes use of the "check chain" aka choke chain which is now recognized by all the professional trainers I know as a somewhat inhumane training tool; there are much better choices available. His description of three types of dogs is almost comical.

My advice is to look for a book that utilizes positive, reward based training methods instead of outdated use of force. Training can be fun for both trainer and dogs as dogs love to learn new things. Although I agree with some of his advice, overall I feel very sorry for the dog subjected to this type of torture --I mean, training.

In looking at the other reviews to date, you might also note that all but one of these people have never rated any other Amazon items, which hints they may be friends of the author. Just something you might want to consider.
