Not sure what makes people think that applying a human psychology that is largely discredited to another mammalian species such as a dog has any credence whatsoever. Sure, if you want a well trained monkey or are training a dog for obedience trials then this is your book. It will certainly teach you to teach your dog how to sit, drop and come, in fact do whatever you like, if that is what you think owning a dog is about. For me, I just like to let dogs be dogs to a degree in any case.

This is a wonderfully simple book on positive dog training. If I have a friend getting a puppy I always reommend this book (in fact I've bought it three times as my copy always goes missing....). The layout is very clear with 2-3 pages on each command plus a couple of common problems and their solutions. Each command is linked with a word and hand signal - which are simple and direct.

This book covers many commands, starting at the very simple (sit, drop, stay) and moving into the obedience competition area (send aways, directed retrieves etc). I find that this means that there is some thing here for all, and it is a book you will come back to again and again, particularly if you compete (or want to compete) in dog obedience. This is a classic and is all based on positive training (no ear pinches here).

Highly recommended.

I bought and read this book about 2 weeks before my Queensland Heeler came home. Within 2 days (he was 7 weeks old at the time) he was house trained and would "come" when we called him. Now at 8 weeks I began teaching him to "sit" and "drop". It literally only took about 5 minutes. I truly believe this is the best method of training a dog. I don't feel bad because I'm choking him or yelling or anything. He wants to do the exercises he's been trained to do. As a society we have been misinformed to think we have to train or dogs using archaic, somewhat violent means. I encourage everyone to at least try this method and if it works for you, pass it on to any pet owner you know. We can make happier, less aggressive dogs.
