Campaigning for president in 1980, Ronald Reagan told stories of Cadillac-driving "welfare queens" and "strapping young bucks" buying T-bone steaks with food stamps. In trumpeting these tales of welfare run amok, Reagan never needed to mention race, because he was blowing a dog whistle: sending a message about racial minorities inaudible on one level, but clearly heard on another. In doing so, he tapped into a long political tradition that started with George Wallace and Richard Nixon, and is more relevant than ever in the age of the Tea Party and the first black president.

In Dog Whistle Politics, Ian Haney López offers a sweeping account of how politicians and plutocrats deploy veiled racial appeals to persuade white voters to support policies that favor the extremely rich yet threaten their own interests. Dog whistle appeals generate middle-class enthusiasm for political candidates who promise to crack down on crime, curb undocumented immigration, and protect the heartland against Islamic infiltration, but ultimately vote to slash taxes for the rich, give corporations regulatory control over industry and financial markets, and aggressively curtail social services. White voters, convinced by powerful interests that minorities are their true enemies, fail to see the connection between the political agendas they support and the surging wealth inequality that takes an increasing toll on their lives. The tactic continues at full force, with the Republican Party using racial provocations to drum up enthusiasm for weakening unions and public pensions, defunding public schools, and opposing health care reform.

Rejecting any simple story of malevolent and obvious racism, Haney López links as never before the two central themes that dominate American politics today: the decline of the middle class and the Republican Party's increasing reliance on white voters. Dog Whistle Politics will generate a lively and much-needed debate about how racial politics has destabilized the American middle class-white and nonwhite members alike.

Ian Haney López is the John H. Boalt Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. An incisive voice on white identity since the publication of his path-breaking book White by Law (1996), he remains at the forefront of conversations about race in modern America. A past visiting professor at Yale and Harvard law schools, in 2011 he was awarded the Alphonse Fletcher Fellowship, given to scholars whose work promotes the integration goals of Brown v. Board of Education.

As a black person, this black person this book connected many dots for me. After reading this book, I had a much better understanding regarding the things that I hear from the political world on a daily basis. This book should be required reading for seniors in high school. I want to give it to my daughter, but she's only in the 7th grade. As Americans, we have to open our minds, open our eyes and put this country to work for all Americans. Whether we believe it or not, there is enough to go around.

This is a great book that really takes a hard look at racism in its more recent permutations, as well as how it affects people of color, whites, and those who play them off against each other for money and power. Neither political party is spared, but the author makes a compelling argument that conservatives pioneered this tactic and still use it more to further agendas that benefit the rich by playing on internalized racism among whites. I learned a lot from reading this book and will read it again. the author's reasoned tone makes the subject of race in America seem less hopeless and overwhelming without pulling many punches.

Every chapter shook my beliefs. Every chapter I said, "No, this cannot be true." But by the end of the book I realized Mr. Lopez is right. Racism is alive and well within America and within each of us. It will not go away until we all acknowledge it and talk about it once again. I am a big "L" Liberal and yet I have racial bias within me. I work to overcome it and believe I succeed. But now, after reading this book, I see that racism is not a matter of hate. It is a bias, and one that savvy politicians know how to invoke even when people don't know they are being called - like the dog and the high pitched whistle of the title.

A detailed examination of primarily Republican Party manipulation of political messaging to gain control of the government to enrich the 1%. In the process, they changed dominant social thinking from a belief in a government that cared for the whole population into one that blames individuals for their social circumstances and seeks to pull the rug out from under the "undeserving". Their message has been effective, synergistic with the rise of the "me" generation. Our 45th president is the successful culmination of this political realignment. Far from being an outsider, Trump is the dream of Republican financial elites. As an unwitting tool, he has come to plunder the middle and working classes for maximum loot for himself while dragging into government a gang of pirates to do the same. They have cast minorities as the enemy, blinding supporters to the commonality of their plight as fellow victims of the super rich. This is a must read for those who want America to finally fulfill the promise of equality and justice for all.

The audible range of dogs extended above the hearing range of humans. It's an apt title and describes how today's racism has evolved using coded message without mentioning race per se. Well researched but written in a scholarly manner, I did not find the book an easy read, but extremely worthwhile. It combines a historical narrative of how racism has evolved and how in the process, the anti-New Deal coalition has co-opted liberalism to mean "not a hand up for all when bad things happen to good people", (a situation during the great depression) but instead "a handout for those free loaders". So this explains the paradox of how people completely sold on Social Security and Medicare can actually vote and support policies that rail against socialism and big government. So much so that many people, especially those in the lower tier of the middle class, are inveigled into voting against their own interest.
