Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K—The barnyard animals are playing with a red ball that accidentally rolls into the doghouse. Who's going to get it out? Mouse says Cow is big, brave, and strong, and must go first. Cow goes in but does not come out. Pig tries next, as Mouse deems him smart, wise, and stinky. Pig takes offense at the "stinky" designation, but proceeds into the doghouse. Pig does not return either. Duck, as the loudest, goes next—and disappears just like the others. The only one left outside, Mouse timidly calls out, "Can't you come out, Duck?"—upon which Dog appears in the doorway and says, "No! Because I am having duck for dinner." Mouse assumes the worst, but the last spread shows all the animals inside the dog's house sitting down to a meal. Mouse joins the party on the endpapers, just in time for dessert. The simple cartoon characters, scenery, and dialogue balloons are outlined in thick, bold lines. Colors are smooth and flat, with backgrounds done in bright blues, purple, and lime green. The pictures are large and distinct, and will work well with a group. The joke is an old one, but it's always new to kids just beginning to understand wordplay.—Ieva Bates, Ann Arbor District Library, MI

Review

Praise for What Will Fat Cat Sit On?:
[set star]“A rollicking and highly promising debut.”—Publishers Weekly (starred)
“Fat Cat’s sheepish grin is the running punch line in this cheerful, boldly designed picture book.”—The New York Times Book Review

"Thick black outlines, solid blocks of color, and easily read facial expressions will work well for story times. Allusions at the end to cake and turnips recall Thomas’s earlier A Birthday for Cow!, which featured these four barnyard friends being just as silly. Read both books together, and you’ll have preschoolers rolling in the aisles." -- The Horn Book Magazine (November/December 2008)

We bought this for our 18 month old yesterday, and have read it to her at least 15 times in the last 24 hours! She keeps asking for it over and over, and everytime, she is very worried, and then relieved at the end. We heard this at storytime and bought it right after on 8/25, so I'm guessing it was released early? Great news for us, because she hasn't gotten tired of the story yet. And surprisingly, neither have we!

The illustrations are just adorable and the story is very clever. It makes me laugh every time, and that is definitely what drew me to the book when we heard it. And look at the illustrations closely - they are also very clever. There is one where they are wondering who is going to go into the doghouse next, and everyone is pointing at Pig, who is looking out at the reader as if to say "Yes, who?" Turns out it's Pig! I hope you enjoy this as much as we have so far!

There is a real art to writing a book that is simple enough for youngsters, yet still entertaining and engaging. Jan Thomas hits the nail on the head with The Doghouse. It's an adorable book with an engaging story and cute, bold illustrations. And the punchline at the end is fabulous.

I bought this for my three-year-old grandson after having read another book by the same author that I liked a lot. This one is even better! My grandson loves it, and I love reading it to him. We want to read it over and over. Highly recommended to all with young children.

We first heard this book at a library preschool reading. My twins are 3 and can recite it. They LOVE this book. it captivates them because there's something very exciting about the storyline... how each animal goes into the doghouse to retrieve the ball but doesn't come out. The illustrations are funny. I love how they give a good examples of the use of adjectives... pig is smart, pig is wise, pig is stinky. LOL. In the end is a surprising twist, where there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of, but all sorts of silly. We had to buy it because we checked it out at the library way too often.

I have 3 grandsons, 2-3 years old. They absolutely love this book, especially when read with a bit of drama. My 2 year old twin grandsons were introduced to The Doghouse when they came to visit and discovered that it was their 3 year old cousin's favorite book. So I bought one to take to their house. In one three day weekend grandma and grandpa probably read this book 50 times. We'd finish and they'd say "again," over and over again until we gave out. Of course they had it memorized before the weekend was out and then I could just turn the pages and let them "read" it. All three boys love books, but this one has really engaged their imagination and they cannot get enough of it.

I am a multi-decade teacher, currently in special education. ALL of my students love Jan Thomas's books, and The Doghouse is a particular hit. I teach children in every grade of our K-8 charter school, and The Doghouse is the most popular book in my classroom library and among the most popular in our school library. I think Jan's special gift is that her books are accessible to all, and her humor never talks down to her reader. Instead, she carries us all along for the ride and eager for the next book. (Disclaimer: I must confess that it is my privilege to know Jan, but her message is universal.)

This book has a clever story. It is funny for kids and the illustrations are clean and easy to understand.

We bought this because our kids liked the dust bunnies book so well. This one is on par and really build confidence in early readers. Plus they have so much fun reading it they sit alone and it doesn't feel like reading. They get pretty charismatic while reading Jan Thomas books and this one is no exception. Great buy for the price!

My grandchildren ages 2 and 4 chose this book each night for about a week to read before bed, and then of course wanted to read it again! Then during the day and would see them "reading" it to each other!
Very cute story! Highly recommend!

This book was 5-star for me, but my just 3-year old granddaughter was terrified! Even after the happy ending, she still won't let me read the story. She'll only look at the last page. It's a shame because it's a great story and fantastic illustrations but I think she was just not ready for it.
