Derrick didn't have a stable family or a mothering role model, so he sees women as selfish, shallow, and devious, and he just dates them for casual sex. When he meets Rebecca, he soon realizes she doesn't fit his pre-conceived notions, but he refuses to admit he might have feelings for her. He doesn't know what to make of the emotions he can't control when he sees her dating another man.
The book only had a few grammatical errors. There was one run-on sentence, and several normative pronouns used when objective ones were needed. There is some cursing, but it doesn't overwhelm or saturate the story, as in some novels. Sex is mentioned, but there are no descriptive sex scenes. In fact, the hero and heroine don't have pre-marital sex within the story, although the reader is left with the idea it is to come. I did find the book rather interesting, but somehow, the story never seemed to gel for me. I gave it a 3.5, which rounded up to a four.
There was definitely some danger and some scary things going on here. There was some romance and an unexpected lie, and many animals sprinkled in the mix. Add in three suitors, a girl's basketball team, friends with advice, some injuries, some arrests, and a wedding and you have exactly what was needed for a great story.
Get the book! I think you'll love it. I did.
Believe it or not, it was the inclusion of pets and a vet hospital with a devoted animal doctor that kept me reading.
All the characters were believable and personable. Loved the dogs!
