If you have a dog you NEED to read this book.
My 12 year old dog (golden/yellow lab mix) couldn’t even stand up! He was overweight and had severe arthritis. My vet told me to consider putting him down. I started feeding a raw carnivore diet (ground beef, liver, eggs, cottage cheese and tuna), with raw chicken wings for treats. and he is now 15! and RUNS up the stairs! He lost 10 pounds and runs, jumps and plays with our 5 year old Aussie.

Great book and very extensive review of the dog food kibble industry...how it started, who is behind it (you will be shocked) and the truths and untruth about kibble. Honestly, after reading this I will not be feeding my dogs regular kibble. I had been buying a well known brand and the dogs..one 12 yr. old and one 9 month old Boston ate it but not really thrilled about it at all. I have tried several brands and gave up till I found one (very expensive) that does not have all that starch in it...which is very bad for dogs. I tried one called Ketona ...available on Amazon. Its pricey and both dogs had stomach problems from it so will see. I gave them each a handful this morning dry...Read the book. It is great.

A truly excellent book! A must read for dog owners who care enough to want to keep their dog as healthy and happy as possible. The author has written a very well documented book on dog obesity. In it he makes several compelling points. These include: 1. dog obesity is widespread, 2. Dog obesity is unhealthy, 3. the dog food mega-corporations are in the business of making money, not making dogs healthier, 4. most veterinarians are not well informed about obesity in dogs or what to do about it, and 5. how dog owners can approach improving their dog’s health and happiness.

This book goes well beyond the ordinary pet lover’s book in that it provides very well researched science and logic for all of the points he makes about dog obesity and nutrition. While there is a lot of science in this book, it is written in plain English and is very interesting reading. I recommend it as good reading not only for dog owners, but also for cat owners, and even for those interested in human obesity as well.

I love this book. I have done a lot of reading about human nutrition in my effort to get into shape. I have learned that most processed foods are full of cheap, terrible ingredients that cause all manor of health problems. It seems the same is true about most dry dog foods as well. I will be switching my dog’s diet to a frozen raw food right away. If you care about your dog’s health you must read this book.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves their dog. It is informative and eye opening. Carbohydrates taken as a large percentage of total calories leads to type 2 diabetes in humans and dogs are clearly descended from carnivores, so their ability to process carbs, and the resulting disease states from consuming them, are even worse. To put it simply, "KIBBLE KILLS".

This is a really good book that cleverly pulls together the latest science, anecdotal evidence, epidemiological observations and the blindingly obvious to further the theory that 'where refined carbohydrates go, obesity is sure to follow'. By looking at the science and research across species Schulof paints a convincing and easily accessible argument that vested interests have a larger hand in deciding who eats what. As more and more people realise that big industry puts profit before health (regardless of species) it is great to find a resource that pulls the threads together and presents them in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner. Schulof applies a lawyer's attention to detail and a journalist's investigative determination to his experience of analysing scientific writing. Simply put; if you consume food, or own an animal that consumes food, you'll learn a lot by reading this book.
