Top customer reviews
This unit works as advertised. I have a fairly small dog (~25 lbs). He had a straight bark collar prior to this - about a year ago, but after the battery died for that collar he slowly started back into old habits and would get into modes where he just wasn't listening to us at all while he barked. I wanted a shock collar option where I could control it remotely, and also have an option which did not shock - like the vibration setting here.
My dog remembered the other shock collar, and just the sound of this collar on vibrate sent him to the corner of the room shivering when I was testing it. As a result, I haven't had to actually shock him. I've used the vibration several times when he got into his barking mode and it does snap him out of it, he's begun to calm down, but need to leave the collar on him for now, until the behavior becomes a habit long-term. Really don't even need the collar turned on, just on him physically at this point.
I put on the rubber tips and tested the shortest shock on myself when it came in (the "4" button on the left). It was a moderate shock on my arm, but very short. No real after effects from it. Definitely a bit more zip to it than, say, a static shock from a doorknob.
The 4, 5, and 6 buttons are a series of 1, 2, or 3 short shocks, respectively. The 1-3 buttons are 1, 2, and 3 second continuous shocks. I would think most smaller dogs would learn from just the 4 button, but certainly you can work your way up if needed or change to the metal tips. The small v button in the middle is the vibrate, it is a pretty long vibration burst, about 1-2 seconds, with no other control on that function. The button is small and a bit recessed. I wish it was bigger and set apart from the 1-6 buttons, but it works fine. I just always double-check before I press it to make sure I've got the right button. Since I've never had to actually shock him so far, I just put the collar on him loosely - he knows it's there. I've even been able to calm him down by using the vibrate when it's not on him.
For bigger dogs you may need the longer/more numerous shock functions, or need to use the metal tips instead of the rubber. Your mileage may vary, but the collar and transmitter work as intended. I've had no issues with battery life or charging so far (finger's crossed), after about 2 weeks. The transmitter uses a standard 9 V - I will replace it with a NIMH 9V I have when it goes out. The collar charges from a USB cable that has a small round connector. I didn't inspect to see if the battery pack is standard/replaceable/etc.
