This music is weird stuff, unusual singing and music. Its nice that way. Some of the songs can make me laugh since they sound funny and playful, and then some sound very sad and deeply moving. It took me a while to like this music since at first it sounded so weird. Now I can see that it is great music and that I was just not used to this. Its probably better than anything on the radio in fact.

I have owned this on vinyl for over twenty years. I love this collection of songs, from "Lullaby" to the "Wa Ohs" to the "Men's Conclave", it's all so seamless and intertwined.

This CD includes one of Monk's few "songs" (with lyrics) -- "The Tale" -- which is a quirky, funny little piece -- and the 20 min title track, which was also titled at one point "Stonehenge," I gather. Both of these are extremely strong cuts and worth listening to. My favorite Monk CD is BOOK OF DAYS, also transplanting us to some imaginary past; my second favorite is FACING NORTH, which, recorded in Banff, explores the feel of the arctic. Third on the list is DOLMEN MUSIC. Only serious devotees need proceed further, though DO YOU BE has some good moments, too (but is out-of-print, I think).

Years ago, I remember reading in William McNeil’s “The Rise of the West” about the Neolithic seafarers who built many monuments from huge rocks named dolmens. Their culture spanned from about 7000 BC to 1000 BC on the shores of western Europe and the British Isles and through Eurasia. Stonehenge is the most famous of these sites, but there are literally hundreds of them scattered across Spain, France, Britain and Ireland, some in states of disrepair and some retaining their construction. The largest such site appears to be on the Algerian shore, a necropolis named Roknia with about 7,000 (!) dolmens spread across the site. The large stones named megaliths built into dolmens, which are interpreted as tombs, so the sites are connected to death, the afterlife and by extension religious rituals.

Meredith Monk attempts to recreate the rituals of the dolmen culture in her 1979 opus, “Dolmen Music.” This work represents one of her most sophisticated efforts, creatively using the extended vocal techniques she has developed. The 6 voices presents a series of sections, often in canon form, voices joining one after another, accompanied by percussion and cello. The canons often layer on different vocal techniques over one another, so they are canons of vocal color rather than melody. The piece is often spectacular and I think represents a brilliant and very successful imaginative leap into prehistory. It may be Monk’s single most impressive composition.

The other music included on the disc is less successful. Monk is a dazzling inventor and exponent of extended vocal techniques. Her issues is that she doesn’t always devote the same amount of effort to her music’s structure and the instrumental accompaniment. A song like “Biography”, from her opera “Education of the Girlchild” (1973) displays that weakness, with some interesting vocalizations superimposed over an ostinato accompaniment. At its best, it can be witty like in the short, charming and humorous “The Tale,” (also from “Education of the Girlchild”), a girlish singsong which always brings a smile to my face. But often this songwriting is too simple to retain my interest. That’s one of the reasons why “Dolmen Music” is just so terrific – the wonderful singing from Monk and her ensemble, and the expertly contrived vocal sounds blending into a pretty sophisticated and ambitious musical structure all with an overriding purpose of re-creating, as far as it is possible, the ritual and music of the Neolithic dolmen culture.

Besides the excellent performance from Monk and her collaborators, it’s worth mentioning that the disc benefits from outstanding sound engineering. I listened to it on a high-end system and it sounds absolutely terrific.

Recommended for “Dolmen Music,” a wonderful and intriguing experience which shows off well all of Monk’s musical qualities.

I saw Dolmen music performed many many years ago at LaMama in NYC. I have owned the vinyl record for about as many years and I love this music. Great to listen at night with the lights out, or on the porch watching lightening bugs dance. I have listened to Dolman music more than to the other side but I am a fan of Meredith Monk also owning Key and having listened to Turtle Dreams a lot which I have on cassette tape--would like to have both of these on CD now. This is really worth adding to your collection when you are tired of all the usual stuff and want to hear with fresh ears. I think this is surely one of Meredith's best albums.

To quote Meredith Monk: "The voice is a language, a world of continuing discoveries." She uses her voice to sing, moan, yodel, squeal, whisper and gurgle, at the same time conjuring up a panoply of characters, from elderly women and precocious children to shrieking ghosts and chanting priests. With the exception of The Tale, she does this on Dolmen Music without words, restricting herself to swooping vocalisation, inventive phonemes and ritualistic incantations. The Tale starts off with a child's weird laughter and vocal contortions and then proceeds into some weird lyrics over shattering glass and car horns. The long piece Dolmen Music that concludes the album, sounds very gothic and medieval with interweaving male and female voices. There is very little to compare Monk's work with - perhaps the closest would be some of the works of Diamanda Galas or Tibetan overtone chanting. All in all, a very unusual album that takes to human voice to places it's never been before.

Of everything Ms. Monk has recorded, this is to my opinion the very best. Despite all the emphasis on Dolmen Music, don't forget about the other four songs on the album, they're precious! Musically truly amazing and - yes - spiritually moving, the title track can be best decribed as a form of musical archaeology, gradually uncovering some sort of future community. This might sound vague, and the association might be entirely personal, being both a musician and an archaeologist myself. But listen to this incredible work of art, and you will never listen to the human voice in the same way again.

El mejor disco de Meredith Monk sin dudas. Música para relajarse e imaginar. Dar rienda suelta a nuestra mente. Atmósferas muy bien logradas. Una obra maestra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dolmen Music / Meredith Monk -1981-

5.0 out of 5 stars il secondo album che non può mancare
Reviewed in Italy on May 30, 2020
