It starts with the intriguing premise of two characters that have both faced great tragedy in their lives. Avery has fought her way through grief to forgiveness, while Liam has avoided facing his own history and instead has immersed himself in the dangerous sometimes violent world of the McKay-Taggert Agency. Avery has become Liam's newest assignment, as it is believed she is involved in a gun running scheme with the charitable organization she works for.
Liam O'Donnell is a pushy and arrogant Dom; that very quickly develops a soft spot for the extraordinary strength of character that Avery Charles has. I loved that this was a heroine with flaws in her character as well as in her physical being. She had weaknesses, and self-confidence issues that anyone could relate to. She is as sassy as she is submissive, and I found myself laughing out loud at her feisty comments multiple times.
I have to admit I didn't like Liam much after reading the first two books, but he absolutely captured my heart in this book. His protectiveness towards Avery was sexy, but when he turned on the Dom it was wicked hot. This book has BDSM themes, but I wouldn't say that it was heavy in that niche. It had erotic love scenes that never got very kinky, but remained sexy. I won't give away any spoilers, but the shower scene is burned into my brain forever and ever now. Lexi Blake has a fantastic way of writing that is very emotive, and draws you into the characters heads so that you can feel what they are feeling.
The plot picked up steam in the last several chapters, and there were multiple surprises that kept me guessing. If you enjoy any kind of suspense in your books, then you will love this one. In this book we were able to check in on Adam and Jake and their new wife Serena (Book 2), as well as get a front row ticket into the magic bred from Sean and Grace (Book1). I love those little moments where we get a look back, they remind me of how much I love the first books.
We also got more information in this story about Alex, Eve, and Ian, and two new characters Simon & Damon came into play. I have to admit Ian has had my attention from book 1, and now that I know more about him I'm itching to read his story.
I hope Lexi continues writing this series for a long time, because I'll be there to purchase every book!
I will confess that I struggled a little with the first two in this series. I loved the idea of ex-special Forces guys running a CIA linked investigative agency and that they're all doms. I love the covers and the James Bond themed titles but, even though I appreciated the first two books, I never fully connected with the characters the way I expected to. I was still invested enough to want to continue and I'm so glad I did because this one is a winner.
The McKay-Taggart gang are all in London hot on the trail of the rogue CIA agent that nearly killed Sean and Grace in the first book. They're sending in one of their own to seduce the assistant to Thomas Molina, someone they believe has gun-running connections with their arch-nemesis and the lucky agent is Liam O'Donnell. Liam has secrets and tragedy in his past and he needs answers. I loved Liam, I loved the way his Irish brogue emerged when he was getting emotional. He's fierce, protective, possessive, bossy - a perfect Dom.
He's sent in to seduce Avery Charles, innocent secretary to Thomas Molina. Avery is an awesome heroine - she's a girl who has lost everything, built herself back up and lost everything again only to spend the best part of ten years getting herself back on her feet. She's an innocent soul who's taken a lot of knocks and is only too lonely and ready when a big, bad dom comes along to charm the pants off her!
I was a bit uncomfortable with Liam and how aggressively he sought her submission in the first place but I understood why he did it and, once he'd finally managed to seduce her, the book started to hum like a finely tuned machine for me. This was the point of no return, I could no longer put the book down and I was completely engrossed to the very last page and then some!
It has an incredibly intricate suspense plot with twists and turns and double-crossings worthy of a great thriller writer. I literally gaped in shock more than once! I never knew what was coming and I won't spoil it with details in this review.
The love story is beautiful - these are two deeply wounded souls finding the salvation in each other they could never have hoped was possible. They heal each other and give each other hope for a future, finally allowing them both to leave their tortured pasts behind. They share some very erotic BDSM scenes but there's nothing too hardcore or intense but they fall deeply in love.
The rest of the gang are all here and it's nice to see Adam and Jake still bickering over Serena. Alex and Eve are still at loggerheads and I think their book will be next. It's obvious how much they love one another and I can't wait for their story. We get introduced to a British dom/MI6 agent Damon who I would very much like to see more of.
Ian is still the main man for me. We learn a little bit more about his tragic past in this one and I can't wait for his book. I can't wait to see that big bad dom brought to his knees by a sub who loves him. We're not getting his book for a while yet and, while I can understand that Lexi Blake is saving the best till last, I am a bit saddened that we won't get to see him happy in subsequent books the way we are seeing Jake, Adam and Sean right now. This is the way Liam introduced him to Avery.
I want you to meet my friend. His name is Ian. Don't let him scare you. He only looks like he eats small children for breakfast.
These books have all been given James Bond titles - the next will be On Her Master's Secret Service which I suspect will be Alex and Eve's story and then we will have Love and Let Die which I sincerely hope will be Ian's story. I'm just glad Lexi Blake didn't go for Octopussy!
4 stars thumping good BDSM romantic suspense.
