Maynard freely admits to being an emotional person, and to very frank disclosures of parts of her life that many people in the same situations might prefer to hide. But the truth is, marriage and family are generally not easy. Navigating a two-person adult relationship is hard enough, but when a child is added to the mix, there are myriad other factors that come into play, and most parents aren't the least bit prepared for them. Most people, I think, will swear to do a better job than their parents did, but this is a promise few can keep. Maynard describes life with two adults, three small children, and precarious finances. It is an open and honest depiction of creativity, joy, chaos and overwhelm. No one who has raised a family can fail to relate to at least some of it.
I'm glad Maynard is a prolific writer because I get something from everything she writes.
