Dominic Ambrosi and his brothers were born with unique abilities. They live in a society where the idea of a psychic phenomenon was just beginning to be talked about in the science circles but mostly it was thought to be madness. People with unusual abilities were in best cases shunned, in worst cases locked up in asylums or killed. With Dominic and his brothers all having supernatural abilities it made this environment dangerous.
Eden is an unmarried lady who has had a rough go of things. Recently she had been living with her cousin whose property was adjacent to that of Dominic’s, but the cousin died during childbirth and now Eden has no place to go. She has no one to look after her as her last surviving family members have no interest in her welfare due to a feud with Eden’s father. One day during a walk she was lamenting about her situation when she became lost and wandered onto Dominic’s property.
While there she had a near death experience but luckily for her was discovered by one of brothers. She would have died if the brother had not used his supernatural ability to heal her. This brother was also a doctor and decided that it was in Eden’s best interests for her to stay at Dominic’s in order to fully recover. This idea absolutely grated on Dominic. He was not used to having people around and all Eden did was promise more complications.
Eden didn’t know what to think of the situation she landed herself in. It had been only recently that she realized that she was psychically sensitive and she was able to sense, see, and be a conduit for spirits. She knew the event that landed her at the estate was not very believable and she didn’t want people to think she was mad. So, she was vague about the ordeal but that led the others to jump to their own conclusions. When Eden started to experience attacks by a demonic force, the brothers’, believing that she was suicidal, discounted events that Eden spoke of. It also led Dominic to fear that Eden was crazy, like his mother had been. He just couldn’t get involved with anyone who was only going to go mad.
Dominic tried to deny his attraction to Eden but in the end, there was just something about her presence that eased him. He had not felt anything like that ever and he was drawn to her. He had been alone for so long and with Eden around he realized that his soul ached for what he felt when he was with her. Before Eden’s arrival he had no true interest in anyone beyond his brothers. He avoided society as much as possible because he was afraid of his abilities being discovered. Once he met Eden though he felt something inside himself shift. He had a great desire to know her, to be known by her, and that frightened him.
Eden was intrigued by the reclusive master of the estate. She had felt an immediate draw to him and he brought out erotic thoughts within her which was both confusing and exhilarating. I do like that when she and Dominic finally did come together she had all the naiveté of a virgin. Their sexual scenes were quite steamy. It was a case of insta-love but they were both lonely people who never had anyone take interest in them. I don’t blame the characters for being so drawn to each other. It was like puppy love only much, much hotter.
There was a dark side to this tale and it was known as the Nemesis. You see, Eden, she was not truly wise to her abilities and that made her easy pickings for the Nemesis. This entity was able to psychically and mentally attack Eden. Later, it was also able to control her, seriously freaky! This dark entity had its own agenda and everything about it was just wrong! It’s addition to the story gave quite the thrill and fear factor. I definitely felt a sense of foreboding throughout the story. Eden had to battle this demon on her own. All the while trying to convince Dominic that she was not descending into madness like his mother did before her death. To prove to him that there is something truly stalking her and possessing her.
One thing that just about drove me batty was Dominic’s dismissal about what was taking place with Eden. He has supernatural abilities but he was refusing to believe that there could be things happening to Eden that were beyond explanation. His history with his mother made him worried about Eden being a nutter, but come on, if you love someone you have to at least try and trust them. I feel that Eden would not have suffered as much as she did if he would only have tried to hear her out. Not very happy with his character about that, ha ha ha.
I did find all the characters in this story to be well-developed and fleshed out. The story has a very gothic feel along with being a romance. It is filled with fear, horror, and suspense. It is pretty cool how the author was able to take each of the brothers and give them such different supernatural abilities but not make it cliché. I really appreciated the relationship between the brothers. It was not all lovey dovey but the connection was there and it was strong. I really enjoyed Dominic’s Nemesis and I highly recommend it.
This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Author, D. Alyce Domain. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
Dominic Ambrosi is a recluse. Living alone away from people, he is content to stay hidden away from the prying eyes of society. Born with an ability that fascinates some and terrifies others, he has learned to hide that which makes him unique. The last thing he expects is for a confused, distraught woman to land in his carefully ordered world. Eden Prescott has no one left - her family is gone and she is stuck in a world that doesn't make room for independent women. When an accident leaves her at the mercy of Dominic and his brothers, she realizes that perhaps she has a place in the world after all. At Dominic's side.
I enjoyed the dynamics between Dominic and Eden. I admired Eden for her resilience in the face of such tragedy, and the way she communicated with Dominic, who was perhaps equally as damaged as her, was a lovely thing. She works to heal him, to let him know that he is a man she could love and does not frighten her. Dominic is terrified that Eden is mad, when she begins to experience supernatural events in his home, so that did become frustrating after a while. It took quite a bit of time in the story for him to come to his senses. His youngest brother was actually more supportive of her than Dominic was, especially in instances when her sanity was called into question. Instead of defending her, he gave in to his doubts and fears. However, in the end, it all worked out for the better, and they both found love in each other.
Exciting story and one I hope will be continued on in a series one day. I am particularly interested in reading more about Dominic's brother, Stephan. Fingers crossed that he will get a book soon!

Dominic Ambrosi is gifted with the ability to shimmer to the astral realm, which means he's able to teleport in a way and when he's in the astral realm he can see a person's essence, he's a tortured individual with a nightmarish past but when an unsuspecting young woman stumbles onto his property and nearly drowns, Eden Prescott comes into not only his life but those that surround Dominic's.
Strange things begin to occur almost at once and questions begin to surface. This is where I began to grow intrigued and yet at the same time as the book progressed I was also frustrated because I didn't feel as though I was gaining any insight. We were in the dark as much as the characters and while some may be alright with that it just served to frustrate me some.
Some articles were not explained enough but there are strings of pieces here and there that make it easy to put it together, still, the lack of explanation did take away from the world aspect.
For the most part it is a character driven story - about these two individuals, and later on, it tests Eden and Dominic, when her sanity is questioned and it causes them to grow. The most frustrating part for me was that he was so quick to declare Eden insane [yet still love and care for her,] but he could not accept that she was something special. I found that a little unbelievable that there are adepts in the world but Eden couldn't have possibly been considered one...
There was also the back story about the Asylum that seemed to be haphazardly strewn into the story that I didn't quite understand the relevance of outside of the fact they considered Eden insane for a time.
Altogether it was a fascinating, quick read. 3.5 savvy crowns!
