I only have 1 issue, having to wait on the next book!
Also, I want my very own Alice!
I must admit that I’m not a gamer, but I am kind of in love with Scott Meyer’s “Magic 2.0” series which shares some similarities to “Dominion of Blades.” I mention my gamer ignorance because there’s a fair amount of detail about how the “game” works, but there’s also enough exposition to help you understand what’s going on, and there’s enough humor to get you through even if you don’t care to hear about experience points and levels and junk.
I tend to shy away from book series. I knew this was to be the first book in a series, but at this point I’ll read anything Dinniman publishes. He’s earned my adoration. His skill continues to grow – this book has a larger scope that his others but he presents a clear vision of this in-game world while not stopping the progression of the story. I’m gratified to see a decent number of reviews for this book already. I’m even more gratified to hear Book 2 is coming soon, but even if it wasn’t, the story from Book 1 was complete enough to be satisfying on its own (something many series don't do well). There’s a lot more of this world to explore, as well as the mysteries of why they’re in there, and I’m ready to get back in my immersion rig (chair and reading lamp and sometimes a beer) and level up (turn the page).
And, hey… don’t be scared. It’s only a book.
Additionally, the story takes place in a high stakes environment where there are really costs to losing, giving the story a great deal of importance throughout.
Good writing, good pacing, and likeable characters set this story above most other litRPGs out there, particularly when even the hippo seems more like a fleshed-out person than I’d expect from this genre.
It has a lot of surprises and keeps you wanting more.
Popper and Alice are the best, I hope we get to see more on their end!
Edit: Had to write another review after reading again. Don't let the 1 star transphobic reviews fool you. This book really is awesome. Most of those commenters didn't even bother to read the book. They saw "transgender" and decided to to trash it. You can tell by their incorrect info in their posts about the story.
I would recommend this book to everyone. It's worth more than $2.99 - even after I read it free on kindle unlimited I went back and purchased it because it is that good. I love how you discover the characters as they discover themselves. I love how they're placed in tough predicaments but they pull through. I love the concept of a MMO with unlimited abilities and ranges (I see these as being the way of the future).
If you're into stories about people getting trapped in games or game-like worlds this is definitely a book to buy. Especially if you're interested in stories that are modern and have real meanings in them. If you're anti-LGBTQ then this book isn't for you. Move on and stop spreading hate.
