*Starred Review* Picking up just after the exciting Devil’s Wake (2012), the ragtag group of teens struggling for survival in a world populated by flesh-eating “freaks” may have finally found a safe haven in the gated community of Domino Falls. Entry isn’t easy: the six teens, their self-appointed guardian, and their loyal dog must prove themselves to those in power at Domino Falls. For Terry and Piranha that means going out on dangerous scavenger missions and risking their lives to bring back much-needed supplies. Kendra and Sonia focus on Threadrunner Ranch, the mansion presided over by charismatic former actor Joseph Wales, a veritable cult leader who is the real power behind Domino Falls. When the teens learn that girls have been disappearing after going to the ranch, the group decides to get to the bottom of it. They unexpectedly stumble on shocking answers about the origins of the outbreak that turned most of the world’s population into freaks. A standout in the superhot zombie subgenre, the second entry in Barnes and Due’s series keeps readers turning the pages fast and furiously, and a tragic twist guarantees that readers will be back for the third installment. --Kristine Huntley

This book picks up where the first ended. The group has heard radio broadcasts from a town Domino Fall's by a charismatic leader of a cult. They make there way to the town and work on ingratiating themselves with their hosts. Where they meet some nice, and not so nice people. As can be expected in a town led by a cult, things are not all what they seem.
The relationships between the characters continue to evolve, as situation after situation is thrown at them. I loved that the characters had issues and had to overcome them, they weren't all just mowing down freaks left and right. For example, Piranha wears contacts and the lack of saline was causing him to go blind. Being blind when freaks are after you, is not a good thing. The panic as he tries to ingratiate himself with the town folks, while not revealing his vision problems was wonderfully done.
Overall, I loved the books. My only complaint as with the first one, was that they were too short. I wanted more. No make that, I want more!
The Big Blue school bus may be down for a moment but it is still driving the plot. The bus having surviving fast running zombies, human pirates, and teenage sexual angst, rumbles into a sanctuary called Domino Falls. But as in any good horror tale, all is not as it appears to be. Being stranded at a fortress town surrounded by electric fences and sharpshooters could be a good situation. Our weary travelers are young, strong, survivors with lots of stuff to trade, so they are allowed sanctuary. They find fried chicken dinners, clean bathrooms and a safe place to sleep. They meet other young people and get jobs. Naturally, the situation starts to deteriorate. People are disappearing. Gold shirted paramilitary types force the inhabitants into silence. A father is shot for begging to see his daughter who visited the mansion owned by the town boss, an aging ex-hollywood movie star.
When a family requests help to rescue their daughter in exchange for fixing Big Blue, the zombie fighting teens are faced with a dilemma. And, as in all good YA books, life changing actions are thrust upon them. I will not give away the terrible secret of Domino Falls. Veteran, zombie killers would shudder. You will have to find out for yourself.
My advice, find a comfortable chair, take a day off from work and enjoy Domino Falls.
