The padding is about half and inch thick and appears sufficient for everyday bumps. Inside the insert, I can fit a Nikon D700 with a 50mm prime lens. And if I angle it correctly, a 70-300mm zoom lens. One of the pockets I have to collapse to fit camera and lens, leaving room for a cable or something small. the other two pockets I can fit a zoom lens and an SB-600 flash. This is not a good insert for using anything bigger than a medium zoom lens.
One major problem I found is the lack of padding on the bottom. To me this makes no sense. The worst risk of shock is from the bottom of a bag. Because I climb like a monkey and drop gear occasionally, I cut a piece of a thick exercise mat to the size of the bottom of my timbuk2 bag, and used that as protection.
PRO: They are wide and deep, and sufficient space for at least 4 lenses and a camera body.
CON: Thin padding was disappointing, and worse, the pad (1/4 inch think or less), is not sealed in the unit. All four sides have an open slot where the padding can be taken, or in my case, fall out. If you are going to leave the insert somewhere permanently, this could be a non-issue. But for me, transferring as a complete unit is not going to work well. The divider panels were thin as well.
This will work sufficiently for an organizational tool within the boxy baskets I use to store my gear, but my original intent will need a different solution. I have ordered different inserts before and will go back to those for my needs.
Where I had an issue is with how it's built. It's made of thin nylon with thin padding that as not actually sewn in. I guess the biggest disappointment is the padding or lack of padding on the bottom. When I set the bag down on the ground, I want to make sure my gear is protected. I am not sure this accomplishes that task.
The above said, it was good enough to buy a second on for my daughter. Just know that you will have to place something in the bottom of whatever you place the insert in.
I just think that anytime you try to structure a Domke bag, you take away what is great about owning a Domke bag.
Domke is the only bag I would carry, very well made, in the USA.
