Blog post“THE CITY THAT NEVER STOPS CRYING”
I just finished GOBLIN, A Novel in Six Novellas by Josh Malerman, and I’m still reeling at what he has done with this book. He has intertwined these novellas so cleverly–they all take place in the same city, on the same night where one character’s car may backfire, and another character may hear it in “their” novella.
It rains constantly in Goblin, and each of these six novellas tells tales that happen under the relentless rains of Goblin, ‘t1 year ago Read more -

Blog postI stopped abruptly, focused on one child, and kneeled down to his level.
“Does your mother smoke?” I sniffed the child.
Moving quickly then, I stopped eye level to another child, voice saccharine sweet as I tilted my head to the side, "Do you have a kitten?" I squinted my eyes.
Oh, the precious child that smelled of smoke answered me with its tiny voice, quieter than a whisper, “I have a baby brother.”
“A baby!” I jumped back as I hollered in counterpoint to2 years ago Read more -

Blog postI just finished Lac Du Mort and Other Stories by Joanne Van Leerdam. I see that she is also a poet and that is not surprising. It’s often a special treat as it was, in this case, to read short stories, or even longer works, by authors who are poets or who also write poetry as their ear is fine-tuned to the nuances of words and the effects their echoes may have within us. Such is the case in Ms. Leerdam’s stories. I especially noted the skill she displayed in knowing just how gentle the touch3 years ago Read more

Blog postAt first it seemed as if there were a lot of strange characters roaming the dark forest around the mysterious Bluegate laboratory. But soon I knew what they were up to inside that shady facility and I knew where all those odd characters were coming from and I was enthralled and immersed in the world of interdimensional incursions and teleportation experiments that was sucking people from the past and the future to collide in cataclysmic present-day events (to paraphrase the author). Blog postUPDATE on Kiss of Quicksilver! – I’ve chosen a narrator! If you’ve read the story and formed a picture of the point of view character in your mind – trust me – your mind is probably going to flip. Mine did when I listened to this narrator’s audition, then I said wow. We have a contract but I’m waiting to hear what they call the “first fifteen minutes” which is a larger sample that I listen to then agree that, yes, we can do this! That’s due July 20th. Blog postUpdate – Crawl Space came out July 13th in ebook and the audiobook has been submitted to audible for approval which, I understand, can take a couple of weeks or so. Blog postBook Name: Shypoke
What gave you the idea for Shypoke?
As you would find, if you knew, in many of my stories, bits of the past have clung to me and begged for a spot on the page. I actually had an Uncle Frank who rode the rails, dropped by occasionally, and taught me how to cuss when I was a kid. This story is sort of my homage to him, but, of course, these characters took on their own lives and told me their story which came as a huge surprise to me. Where did this scratch come from? Scratches are those annoying little wounds that randomly appear on our flesh, itching, burning, and pestering us throughout our days. Many times, we know the source of their assault; clawing from our cats, a nail sticking out from a wall, or even a passionate night with that special someone in our lives. The scratches within this anthology are the result of something more sinister, not something that leaves an blemish on our flesh, but an everlasting scar upon our souls. Scratches is a spine tingling glimpse into the origins of mysterious terrors that appear or are felt throughout our bodies. Are the hairs on the back of your neck standing because you are scared, or is there a nefarious being breathing down your neck?

THERE’S MORE THAN ONE KIND OF FRONTIER
You won’t find the place on any map. It’s somewhere else, hidden away in a wondrous parallel reality of mystery, awe and terror.
This both is and isn’t the “Old West.” They share the same stark and unforgiving terrain and exist in the same timeframe, primarily the 1800s. The people are generally the same hardy lot that left eastern society for reasons spread as wide as the open spaces they sought.
But there the similarities cease. In Spirit County, for example, death is often not the end but the beginning. Sometimes even the middle. Mythological creatures prove real...and deadly. Towns can disappear by daylight and return with the setting sun. And in that dark and turbulent dreamscape, where the rational mind can wind up gunned down in the street by its own fearful denial, there you will find that indeed there are frontiers far beyond the edge of not just human society but human comprehension.
In Welcome to Spirit County, six writers take their shot and then pass the revolver, each aiming to punch a hole through the veil of the senses to a different and staggering reality. Mount up and follow them if you dare.
