Warning: pretentious music elitist douchebaggery forthcoming

Whenever I evaluate an artist whose work I've followed for years, it can be difficult to remain objective when reviewing their latest offering. To clear up any biased affectations, I ask myself a simple question after the first listen of their latest album: "Would I recommend this as the first introductory album to someone who has never listened to this band?" Unfortunately, this is the first-ever MJK album that I would answer the question with an immediate, flat-out "No".

Don't get me wrong. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is adeptly executed, but is lacking any of the originality that has always defined the still-young Puscifer project; it struck me as being a vanity vehicle for MJK to prove to himself and the fans that, YES, he can still sing (and do it well). Tool fans will feel like a middle schooler at a strip club after checking out 'Breathe'- the tease is there, but we're going to have to wait for who knows how long before we can get our fill. My personal favorite was 'Balls to the Wall'- another cover, yes, but exquisitely done with the creative flair I'd come to expect from this talented musical collective.

The irksome bit is that, well, there's technically only four songs. Granted, the remixes are unique enough to stand on their own, but just because a remix has been included on an album doesn't mean it's good. The 'Silent Servant's El Guapo Mix' of 'Balls to the Wall' is a study in lazy, uninspired electronic nonsense (and curiously reminiscent of the 'Terminator' soundtrack). If you're going to play the same percussive loop, throw us more than a rare sonic layer to keep us from going into an autistic trance, mmmkay?

Everyone's a critic, opinions are like rectums, et cetera.

I think I first heard about Puscifer's new release "Donkey Punch the Night" on Facebook. (The responses were hilarious, by the way: "I'll lose all my respect for you if you put out the album with that cover". ) My first impression before buying the album was being underwhelmed by the track listing: a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody (how could anyone do this?), two originals, another cover (Accept's balls to the wall of all things), and three remixes (almost half of the album). After everything else that Puscifer has done I was willing to give it a chance, especially in light of the rather humorous cover).

Donkey Punch the Night is an amazing EP. The cover of Bohemian Rhapsody stays absolutely true to the original, and really highlights how amazing Maynard's voice and arrangement skills are. I couldn't imagine a cover of this song being better executed. After BH, the album takes a departure into an 80's synth-pop inspired sound. Breathe is a catchy, groovy, and somewhat darker track. Dear brother is now one of my favorite Puscifer songs, with some great (albeit possibly sobering) lyrics. Balls to the wall was another phenomenal choice for a cover. It's slower, lighter, and much more melodic than the original (and bests Accepts original hands-down). The three remixes change the pace again into a more techno (but still 80's synth-pop inspired sound). Each is different enough from the original to make them stand out as if they were originals.

If you were fans of either V or Conditions of my Parole you'll probably like the sound of Donkey Punch the Night.

This album is genius. It's NOTHING LIKE "Conditions of My Parole." If you're a big Puscifer fan, you probably know that each album is different from the last, and many of those albums are just remixes of old tracks.

This album is all new tracks, and the cover of Bohemian Rhapsody is just faithful enough that the casual listener probably wont even know that it isn't the original recording, but anyone that has heard BR on any soundsystem that wasn't in a bar or a stadium will hear that it has its own flavor as well. "Balls to the Wall" is a fantastic recreation of the original, and the remix is good too. Really, they're all great. BUY THIS NAOW!!!

I love MJK and everything he's done with Tool & A Perfect Circle but Puscifer at first didn't register with me like I wanted it to and that was probably just due to high expectations & that I like electronic/ ambient/ trip-hop/lounge music experimental which is what this is to me. MJK calls it the place where his misfit ideas go & while the 1st album grew on me and I liked any Puscifer in between, this one hits home with great beats that grind n' bump, hit the spot and wanna hear em more n more. The Queen cover is a treat too.

I love the direction Puscifer has been going. Maynard is one of those musicians that can cover a song and make it even better than it was before. These songs have been in my playlist for months and I can't get enough of these guys. If you've enjoyed all of their other releases you should pick this up as it is easily worth the price of admission. Puscifer resembles APC more than Tool, but either way fans of Maynard shouldn't be disappointed.

I've had the pleasure of seeing this band twice now and I like them more each time. This EP is great, even if it is shorter than I'd like (but then again, its an EP). The remixes were good but the real meat and potatoes are the first four songs.
