Eleven-year-old Timmy Unterkanz suffers the death of his dad, and then extreme bullying in a new town. Timmy’s in serious trouble – that is, until Pedro steps in. Timmy’s safety and happiness will come down to one final showdown against his tormentor, the bully Eddie. About the Author

Dean Lombardo was born in Norwalk, CT, and now resides in northern Virginia. He is an author and avid traveler who makes it a point to explore many of the same settings where his fictional characters can be found. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and a natural curiosity about the universe and many things in it. “Donkey Sense” is Dean’s third published novel, his first for a younger audience. His pre-vious two novels include the sci-fi/satire "Space Games” (Kristell Ink, 2013) and the sci-fi/horror novel "Vespa" (Active Bladder, 2007). When not writing or researching his nov-els, Dean works as a writer and editor in the information technology industry, with a focus on software products. Prior to that, he served as an editor and reporter for several news-papers and magazines in New York and Connecticut. Besides writing and traveling, he en-joys hiking and reading suspenseful novels and mainstream scientific journals. Dean lives with his wife Karen and their two children and one dog.

Vivid characterizations and natural dialogue

Donkey Sense is a very readable book for young people. The characterizations are vivid and the dialogue feels natural. The conflict is bullying, and that of Tommy, a boy who has a single parent, his mother. The bullying was harsh and disturbing for me but I have read of this, name-calling and physical attacks that were worse than in my day and region. Yet the story follows Tommy’s adjustment in spirit through a day with his rise from humiliation. I liked the talking donkey although the secret about Pedro was left as a leap of faith. This was nicely crafted with horse racing and then a donkey race where Tommy again contended with a main bully. There, the bully’s father’s angry display gave some understanding. Perhaps that theme could have been more developed. This is a story about working through child crisis and finding available friendships that can alleviate and strengthen.

Dean Lombardo has sketched a story that has all the elements I enjoy in a novel. Well rounded characters who are separated each with their own personalities and interacting in such a way to explain the emotions of young people.

Parents who read this novel may develop a better understanding of the effects of bullying, which are of great concern today. It seems these behaviors happen for a reason, making life as miserable for others as they are themselves. This charming little book tells us a child who is bullied can find a way to escape the fear and shame that comes with being treated with such dreaded humiliation. Finding new friends, getting involved in activities with friends can go a long way in building a higher level of self confidence that will help erase some of the pain of feeling alone and rejected.

Pedro is a clever and amazingly talented donkey who, in becoming the first friend of the main character, helps little 11 year old Timmy find encouragement and overcome his insecure feelings. This is a valuable book for children and adults with its message. It should be required reading in every middle school in this country. I loved this story.

I bought this book yesterday and finished reading it this morning. It's a charming story about an eleven year old boy--an outsider named Timmy. It starts out while Timmy is finishing his second day in a new school, and a group of boys are bullying him. What I love about the story is that Timmy must learn how to stand up for himself and stop the bullying. I also like the farm, the horse riding events, the lovable donkey, Pedro, and the budding friendships with Timmy's classmate, Kelly, and the local farmer, Mr. Atkins. This book is geared towards children, but it's enjoyable for all ages.

Donkey Sense is an absolutely charming tale of a boy, new to town and struggling to make friends, or more appropriately stay out of the way of bullies. One day he runs into a feisty donkey who shows him how to stand up for himself when no one else can and how to break out of your shell and try new things. Appropriate for all ages 10 and up, but written for middle school ages (grades 6-8), it's a tale that will have you turning pages furiously to see what happens. Offering a great message about friendship and overcoming adversity, it's just an entertaining read sure to please!

Dealing with Life and Bullies

Eleven-year-old Timmy Underkanz moves to Richfield, Pennsylvania with his mother after losing his father to cancer. Already his nerves are on edge. Now he must attend a new school where he has no friends. Soon he discovers more worries. Bullies.

Timmy' s life begins to turn around after meeting Kelly, Mr. Atkins, and Pedro. Pedro is a talking donkey with attitude. The bubbly, talkative friendship of Kelly, some fighting techniques from Pedro, and encouragement from Mr. Atkins helps Timmy overcome his fears and he grows to learn about the "Joys" of life.

I definitely recommend this book for all ages. It's a wonderful read for schools teaching on topics about bullying.

Enjoyable and Important

Some universal themes never grow old; at least they shouldn’t. I enjoyed my read of Donkey Sense, my first foray since childhood into middle-grade literature. This story of one boy’s personal journey is well told and can be important to all age groups.
I found the story of eleven-year-old Timmy compelling. The question of how to deal with not only one bully but a handful feels insurmountable. Timmy’s first week in his new school couldn’t have been more challenging.
His coming to know Kelly, Mr. Aitkins and, most importantly, Pedro the donkey induce the tale with occasional relief and humor while the tension of the situation rightly builds to a well-told big scene and reader satisfaction. I recommend Donkey Sense.

The is a tale of a 6th grader struggling with life's issues. The talking donkey keeps things from getting too serious, while enabling the young man to deal with life as in 11 year old. A good read.
