I have many Donner products including many ukuleles and guitar pedals. So I was excited to get their UBass.
This Ubass is super cool and a blast to play. The looks, feel and the sound is amazing.
What I like:
Kind of sounds like an Upright Bass.
Small and portable. - can wait to use it live.
Built in pickup and tuner.
Not in the video but I did some recording direct into Logic Pro and got some cool sounds. I'll be doing some more recordings and videos soon.
Overall I'm happy with this UBass and would recommend it.
Bang for the Buck, I really don't think this deal can be beat!
Problems: No batteries sent, but I have emailed them and hope for a response. Will update rating at that point.
I just received SIX batteries from Donner. VERY good customer service, very quick email response, and quick resolution.
The second issue is: there was a rattling coming from inside when I would play. I opened up the back, and found the G string wasn't seated properly and there was a lot of excess string touching the inside of the body. Straightened the string out and clipped all the excess, now it plays great. Can't wait to hear it plugged in. At that point, I will post a video.
Overall: Definitely worth the money.
After I bought batteries and installed, I started playing with it amplified. Surprised at how much body you can get out of this little thing.
I brought it to a duo gig, almost as a joke. The lead player kind of scoffed at it, but when he heard it, his eyes were huge and he gave the nod of surprised approval. I'll try to post a video of it plugged in later.
I bought this knowing that I would be able to return it if I tried out the Kala down the street and decided to upgrade. This is a small detail, but the Donner bag and tuner are IMO nicer than the Kala. Is there a big difference between the instruments? If so, it's not a $200 difference to my ears. I'm very happy with this little guy. I've been playing it around the apartment, and I used it to try out some amps last weekend. I thought there might be a little rumble on the E string, but I changed my fingering and it went away.
Then I thought I'd try the UBase round wound strings and plug it into my bass amp. Wow it can rattle the windows with rich bass sound. Touchy though and requires precision fingering. Nice mahogany plywood and laser cut panel for access to inside when restringing. Amazing value.
I think the neck angle is a little steep though so the action is pretty high when you are at the 12th fret. This also makes the fingered notes go sharp even though the open strings are in tune. I knocked a star off for that. Most of the time I play down closer to the nut anyway so I can deal with it. Fun Fun Fun little bass though. Built in tuner and pick-up are worth the price. Really a classy looking and nice sounding instrument.
I typically play it without any amplification. My guess is that even a serious bassist would find the convenience of being able to pick this up and just play without having a heavy instrument or having to plug things in would mean that it is their go-to instrument for just noodling or figuring out something they just heard on the radio or things like that. I have not tried playing it in front of people nor tried plugging it into a PA system. To my ear it sounds quite nice on my regular guitar amp.
The only negative i have is the packaging. The box was a 2 piece typical guitar box but it wasnt sealed at all and my mailman just threw it in the snow on my porch. There was actual snow inside the box. But the bass itself was very well packaged inside the box and protected with foam and sealed up so it wasnt a big deal at all!
Also the clear coat could have been a little thicker. In some places you can feel the wood itself but for the price im surprised it had any at all. Living in a dry climate im going to humidify it to avoid cracks and warping but overall im very impressed with the quality of this bass! I would absolutely recommend this U Bass!
