Her only hope lies in befriending Richard's vampire cohort, Paul, who's more than happy to toy with Lenore before she expires. But is Paul becoming too attached to his plaything? His human servant, Charles, thinks so—and he'll stop at nothing to eliminate the competition.
If Charles's schemes don't end Lenore, then Richard's hunger surely will. To make it out alive, someone will have to die in her place. Lenore now has something terrible in common with her captor: She must kill in order to survive.

The story is gritty. None of the characters are very sympathetic. The protagonist, Lenore, is a damaged Alice that steps through a dark, murderously malevolent looking glass. She finds herself literally a lamb for slaughter. She is in the ultimate, supernatural Kobayashi Maru scenario. I could't see an out for her. She's a survivor, but the more she struggles to survive, the more onerous her situation becomes. There is a great twist at the end that made sense only as I was reading it. I finished this book with a very satisfied feeling. It was strange to find myself smiling after reading the final word of such a decidedly dark story.
I also like the concept of the asexual vampire. Most vampire lore is built around the extraordinary sexual powers that vampires possess. But not these vampires. The only other story I'm aware of that features a vampire sans sexuality is the great Swedish film "Let the Right One In".
If you like horror, don't sleep on this one...
Lured into a basement apartment to peruse a record collection, Lenore finds herself at the mercy of vampire Richard. Richard gives her the choice of death or becoming a live-in donor, slowly bled over time to tide him over between killings. She picks the latter.
The claustrophobic tale takes place almost entirely within the windowless apartment walls, and the reader can't help but feel the panic Lenore tries to quell through her anti-anxiety drug addiction. Richard and his vampire compatriot Paul are complex, manipulative characters, always keeping Lenore, and the reader, wondering if now is the time Lenore's life will end.
The story slowly builds the reader's hope that perhaps Lenore may survive her ordeal, and the twists and turns of the last hundred pages will keep you engrossed late into the night.
There are a few gruesome scenes, but this tale is driven by character, not carnage. Put it on your reading list.
