Cool Concept, Ended Up Being a Let Down As A Gift-Giver (See notes)

Bought this for a buddy of mine for xmas this year. He loves puzzles and loves booze, and I should also mention that he is incredibly gifted intellectually. The puzzle is good standard size for bottles - it can fit a tall wine bottle (as it is adjustable) or a regular 750ml liquor bottle. I was worried when I had gotten a bottle of Jim Beam to lock into the puzzle, as that brand has a square base-shaped bottle - but there were no issues.

It took me about 15 minutes to put the puzzle together and "lock" the bottle into place. You have to follow the instructions very carefully, and also need to make sure you have the rope it comes with tied to the exact correct length (for the height of the bottle) or the puzzle will not lock properly. There's even a warning in the instructions that says "DO NOT manipulate the puzzle in any other way or tie additional knots or the puzzle will become unsolvable without damaging it or the bottle." I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to also make this into a gag gift. I tied all kinds of additional knots and did extra configurations onto the puzzle. I tested it on another friend before gifting it, and he gave up after 2 hours of frustration.

When I finally did give this as a gift, I also gave the disclaimer that my buddy could not cut any ropes or untie any of the knots (which surely would make the puzzle unsolvable, enabling me to ridicule my friend and insult his intelligence for failing). It took him less than 2 minutes to solve. WITH all of the extra knots and modifications that should have made it impossible. He didn't even realize I had tried to rig it as such. Left me feeling very disappointed and let down. So naturally, I drank the bottle of booze and he never touched the contraption again. I'm sure it was tossed in the trash with the wrapping paper later that evening. It was just a bummer that I spent so much time on something that he used for all of 90 seconds.

In any case, 'tis better to give than receive. I was told it was one of the best gifts he'd ever gotten in his life, and that he thoroughly enjoyed it. If it were just a little bit more difficult, I would rate it 4-5 stars.

Great Way To Give A Gift Of Wine

I wasn't sure which one of these "Don't Break The Bottle" puzzles would be best. I decided on this one since the product looked durable and the rope was large. The large rope has less of a chance of getting tangled and the configuration of the puzzle is such that people can actually watch you try to solve it. The people I gave it too had a great time solving it, as did the guests they had over. They passed it around trying to solve it. I've always been into puzzles and I think this one is just the right amount of difficulty for what it is. You want people to be able to solve it, but not right away.

There were a couple of quality issues with the puzzle but were easily fixed. The beads on the rope would snag a bit. I took the edge of a scissor and ran it inside of the bead (without dissasembling the puzzle). This allowed the beads to slide without catching. Also, the wood piece that goes on top of the bottle had a crack in it at the end furthest from the bottle. I'm not sure if this happened after some use or was shipped that way. In either case, a little wood glue made that a non issue. Overall though, the puzzle looks quite nice and feels good in the hand while trying to solve.

In any case, I would buy this puzzle again...knowing that I might have to do a little prep work to make it operate smoothly. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the quality issues.

You can adjust the height of the puzzle to fit a few different heights within a decent range - the end of the rope knots in the piece that sits on the top so you can pull that out and shorten the rope if you have a shorter bottle. I was able to put this on a liquor bottle and still fit it in a "bottle" gift bag. I am excited to see them try and open it at our party - it was even a little confusing setting it up. :) Love that it can be reused.

The instructions for this were not too hard to follow but did need to be read several times to understand. The quality of the product that I received was great and there were no problems with it. The product I received came with a red rope instead of the whit one that is pictured (no big deal for me but may be for some). The color of the stain on the wood of the product I received was also a little darker than the one pictured (again, no big deal for me but it may be for some). Overall, I received a quality product that differed from the picture in cosmetic aspects only.

So oder so ähnlich lauten die Sätze wenn man Familie oder Freunde an dieses Puzzle lässt. Ich habe diese Puzzle als "Verpackung" für ein Geschenk verwendet und es hat seinen Zweck nicht verfehlt. Der Beschenkte sieht zwar was er bekommt, kommt aber nicht ran. Daraus ergibt sich der Ehrgeiz das Rätsel zu lösen.

Zur Verarbeitung und zum Handling gibt es nicht viel zu sagen. Das Puzzle kann auf verschiedene Flaschengrößen mit einem Knoten in der Flaschenhalshalterung eingestellt werden. Das "Zusammenbauen" des Puzzles mit Hilfe der Anleitung funktioniert mit nur wenigen Handgriffen und ist spätestens, nach einigen Umwegen (wie bei mir) erledigt.
Das Holz ist glatt und weist keine Splitter oder sonstige Unebenheiten auf. Die Schnüre sind ebenfalls ausreichend dimensioniert um auch ein bisschen Zug in die Konstruktion zu bringen.

Zu erwähnen wäre vielleicht noch, dass dem Spiel keine Flasche beiliegt, was mir auf den ersten Blick nicht ersichtlich war. Aber da die Geschmäcker ja verschieden sind, macht diese Lösung auch mehr Sinn.

Alles in allem ein sehr nettes Spiel/Rätsel/Puzzle und auch als Geschenkverpackung zu gebrauchen.

The adjustable rope allows various heights of bottles to be 'imprisoned' and the product is robustly made.
