Spoiler: In this hypocritical yarn, a war veteran who's lost his sight and his only daughter is trying to live out the rest of his pitiful existence in the dregs of MI until the writers shoehorned in some inconsistent evil character trait on him (because the plot said "he needs to be bad somehow") -- er, I mean until some bratty, entitled millennials decide to break into his house & steal everything else he has left. Our hero manages to kill two of the worthless thieves while the one selfish whore flees with his stolen property & escapes the police - and justice - but is sad at the end because our hero(?) wasn't punished for his crime either. Aah the classic "Punishment for Thee but Not for Me" moral; which is totally not a classic moral to any story. Know why? Because it's unpalatable, morally inferior, aaand uninspired writing.
We're forced to care about the characters despite the fact that they are doing a bad thing. It's not right to root for burglars but 2 of the 3 have redeeming qualities, and while their choices and actions are questionable, you can't help but root for them to at least avoid the nightmare they've walked into.
The suspense is masterful in this. I know people will always cherish Alfred Hitchcock's films--and yes, they are great, and many hold up, but it's time to admit that a master can be out mastered, that those that studied him can apply not only his techniques, but others, and that is what has occurred here.

Again, this is the a spoiler alert that I will put up in case you hate predictable endings with an agenda to push.
So the characters are predictable: Harding working poor girl from troubled family, Beta nerd that adores her, and total jerk of a boyfriend. Both guys die, the jerk because he is not smart, and the nerd because he protects her. The girl gets to live after shoving "white liquid" down army veteran killer's throat (it is supposed to be symbolic). Girl gets to live and the film ends with a somber message that society is mourning the army veteran, not knowing of the people he killed. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Fede Alvarez, is one of the best up and coming directors. His take on Evil Dead was truly amazing and I was very intrigued to see what he would do next. I was so pleasantly surprised with this film, the marketing didn't really do it for me, it sparked my interest but that's about it. This movie is amazing. From start to finish you are invested and captivated in this film, the acting is stella with a very menacing performance from Stephen Lang. But the real star of the film is Fede Alvarez. The way that he films, the set up of the scene. The nail biting suspense that he captured. This a masterful horror film and is amongst the best films I have seen all year. Thank you Mr Alvarez for delivering the goods once again.

Interesting movie about three teenagers who make the mistake of breaking into a blind man's house. The blind man is not as easy a target as they think, and he is not to be trifled with. He is ex-military, and he is someone who is willing to fight. He lives in the last remaining house in a neighborhood filled with abandoned homes. It is not a concept I have not seen before. The movie is good in that it wastes no time in getting to the story. It is a thriller, not a gory slasher movie. It is a movie which twists and turns and toys with your loyalties - Do we want the teens to get what we think they might have coming to them, or do we want the blind man to get his? Once we think we know, something else is revealed that makes us question what we thought. Nothing is as it seems on the surface. The movie is well acted and filmed, and there is really nothing overly gratuitous in it. The ending is questionable. Some liked it, others didn't. It is worth the 90 minutes of your time. Not really something for kids under 16.
I don't watch to many horror films any more but the preview for this movie looked original, plus I'm a Stephen Lang fan so I decided to buy it.
I won't say anything about the film itself except that the premise is very original and it has lots of good twists and turns. My buddy and I watched this blu-ray together and I was able to predict a few, "... wouldn't it be great if this and that happened next". Each time, for example the dog and the crawl space, just made it better and better.
Although I did have a much better ending, that several people agreed would have made this truely great. But watch it. It's a terrific little film and Stephen Lang gives an unforgettable performance.
I couldn't even watch the entire movie - and my wife said "you NEVER stop watching even the bad ones!" The premise, and the trailer, seemed great: three people break in to rob a blind ex-military guy who turns out not to be such an easy mark. Now, okay, they decided to break in at night to add to the suspense of the movie by giving the blind guy an advantage, but that was already a stretch since we had already seen them break into a high-end home in broad daylight because they had the skills to override the alarm system. The home they broke into was in a bad part of town, sparsely populated, and they knew they guy would be home. So why not break in during daylight hours? They took the risk despite their expectation that he only had $300K in the house. I could go on about how good a shot the blind guy was with a gun, why three people couldn't overcome one guy, and why they couldn't manage to beat him to the front door, among other things. I understand we "suspend our disbelief" when we watch movies, and perhaps I would have been able to do so if this had been a supernatural horror film. Unfortunately there had to be too many coincidences for this plot to be the slightest bit plausible that I had to bag it, about halfway through the film. That's nearly an hour of my life I'll never get back.
4.0 out of 5 starsDecent suspense thriller with a sprinkling of horror

Jane Levy and her gang of burglars can't resist taking on a job that can potentially yield hundreds of thousands of dollars. They just need to burgle the house of a blind ex-army soldier who apparently received a large compensation payout when his daughter was 'accidentally' killed (i think in a road accident) by the daughter of a very wealthy family. However, things don't go anywhere near to plan as the blind man puts up way more resistance than they could have possibly expected. After breaking in, they try and find where he has hidden the money but he wakes up and gives them hell. Don't want to give any more away but be assured of many shocks and unexpected moments in this original( I think) thriller from the creators of the Evil Dead. Only minor flaw is the cliched horror moment when someone should be dead after receiving horrific injuries but, of course, they never are.
4.0 out of 5 starsNothing wildly original but a gripping slice of escapism

Home invasion thriller set in bedraggled Detroit - three kids decide to rob a blind Iraq vet who is rumoured to keep a huge stash of cash in his house - seems like an easy score, right?
A good twist that isn't easily foreseen makes this film a cut above the usual, and the director knows how to ratchet up the tension.
Good service great delivery no problem with seller. Movie it self well let’s juts say that that’s over an hour of my life I won’t get back, utter rubbish movie, slow to get in too, you could tell what was going to happen before it did. Nothing out the ordinary, the man is blind and has great senses... a massive let down.. wouldn’t recommend...
