Scarlett Hamilton has endured more sadness in her young life than the typical fifth grader. She deals with her losses by sticking to the motto: Don't Cry, Scarlett. Along with her brother and sister, she lives with her eccentric grandmother who encourages each of them to find their gift. While her sister, a violinist, and her brother, an athlete, seem to recognize their gifts, Scarlett is unsure that there is anything special about her. On the outside, she is a happy, adjusted girl, but on the inside, her heart is aching.

Then, one summer, she discovers that she has a special gift as an artist. With the help of her art teacher and the love of her family, Scarlett begins to understand that emotions are simply a part of living. She also begins to see that she is special in her own way...and that life is a thing to cherish.

A Rare Gem!

This is a wonderful story. I actually loved it! The story is told by Scarlett, who is eleven. She is a middle sister and a talented artist, but the thing that really sets Scarlett and her story apart is the way she sees life. As her Nana says, she is a deep thinker. There is a tragedy in the past but no murders or crimes, no awful language, no dysfunctional family, and no hateful children - though her brother Blue, being a typical big brother, comes close at times. Still, you can see that even Blue secretly does love his little sisters and his family.

Now, I hesitate to tell you this for fear you won't try reading it yourself, but this story actually made me cry. It came close several times when Scarlett would relate her thoughts and feelings, but I'll admit the ending had me bawling! And I'm a 64 year old man! Yeah, it's that good.

Please do yourself a favor and try this book. You may not be as wimpy as I am, but I'm willing to bet you'll love Scarlett's story.

I loved this book. It had a lot of great life lessons in it. It, unlike most books it was a very realistic book. I also personally love ❤️ sad books and @ times I almost cried. My mom and dad are alive but this book gave me a good idea of all the pain these children are going through
