Now saying all that, readers actually will eventually learn some of the basics of looking after an animal once they get to the final page. So overall although a scary story for the canine character the end result is a good thing. The illustrations are quite detailed and done in a fun cartoon style. Although I didn't like how nearly everyone has text in the image saying Catch That Collie! It's almost like these were promo artwork done to promote the book somewhere and they've decided to include them as illustrations at a later date. So it's somewhat a good read in the end but if it's just a good picture book teaching kids about responsible pet ownership there's better books out there such as How to Greet a Dog and What to Avoid by Sophia Yin.
The plight of so many homeless dogs is one of great importance to me, and this book does a wonderful job of describing the joys that a shelter dog can bring to someone's life. While I don't think I could bring myself to have a dog spayed or neutered (I don't want to do anything to my dog that I wouldn't want done to myself), I understand its importance in reducing the number of dogs that live miserable, short lives because they aren't able to find a Forever Home. That point, plus a final summary of dog ownership tips, is communicated very well in this book. Catch That Collie would certainly make for entertaining and educational reading for any young child that is just learning the ropes of canine care and companionship.
