In addition to being known to over thirty million viewers for his work on NBC's Today show, a role that has earned him 13 Emmy awards, Al Roker is a bestselling author with many acclaimed books to his credit.

His first book, "Don't Make Me Stop This Car: Adventures in Fatherhood" spent weeks atop the New York Times best-seller list. In May 2002, "Al Roker's Big Bad Book of Barbecue" was published and, quickly became a summer blockbuster hit. His second cookbook, "Al Roker's Hassle Free Holiday Cookbook", became a huge success as it prepared America's budding chefs for the holidays. "Big Shoes: In Celebration of Dads and Fatherhood" honors fathers and their contributions to lives of their children.

Working in fiction, Roker's trilogy of murder mysteries are exciting crime novels that revolve around a fictional TV program much like TODAY. This trilogy includes “The Morning Show Murders” (recently made into a TV movie for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries starring Holly Robinson Peete and Rick Fox), “The Talk Show Murders,” and “The Midnight Show Murders.”

Al’s 2013 book, "Never Goin' Back-Winning The Weight Loss Battle For Good" was a NY Times Bestseller and told Al's personal struggles with his own weight, bariatric surgery, and diet/nutrition. It even included healthy eating recipes!

In 2015, Al published "The Storm Of The Century: Tragedy, Heroism, Survival, and the Epic True Story of America’s Deadliest Natural Disaster: The Great Gulf Hurricane of 1900." In less than twenty-four hours, one storm destroyed a major American metropolis—and awakened a nation to the terrifying power of nature. Al’s use of first person narrative received rave reviews.

Al collaborated with his wife, ABC News correspondent, Deborah Roberts, on "Been There Done That - Family Wisdom For Modern Times." BTDT has been described as a funny, heartfelt, and empowering collection of life lessons, hard-won wisdom, and instructive family anecdotes from Al and Deborah’s lives, from their parents and grandparents, and from dear friends, famous and not.

Al also recently wrote his first children’s book, "Al Roker's Extreme Weather: Tornadoes, Typhoons, and Other Weather Phenomena” in 2017. With this mesmerizing book that covers a wide range of topics, readers will learn about the conditions that generate unique weather occurrences like red sprites, thundersnow, and fogsicles.

Al’s latest book book “Ruthless Tide - The Heroes And Villains Of The Johnstown Flood” was released in May 2018. In Ruthless Tide, Al Roker follows an unforgettable cast of characters whose fates converged because of that tragic day, including John Parke, the engineer whose heroic efforts failed to save the dam; the robber barons whose fancy sport fishing resort was responsible for modifications that weakened the dam; and Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross, who spent five months in Johnstown leading one of the first organized disaster relief efforts in the United States. Weaving together their stories and those of many ordinary citizens whose lives were forever altered by the event, Ruthless Tide is testament to the power of the human spirit in times of tragedy and also a timely warning about the dangers of greed, inequality, neglected infrastructure, and the ferocious, uncontrollable power of nature.

I have never laughed so hard. But this book also took me back down memory lane growing up in Nashville Tennessee...Great read!

By now, I've probably read this book three or four times. Although the beginning was a bit boring, a couple of chapters in I got really into it. All of it was told with a bit of a funny tint. You can tell he loves his kids through it!

This is a cute book and worth the read. It has lots of very familiar stories that I think most can relate to and presented by the author in a real story telling type manner.

I loved hearing about parenting from this dad's perspective. This book was thoroughly entertaining and filled with modern baby tales (i.e. adventures with the childproofers, the chic baby gear to use, etc.). Mr. Roker gave the reader a birds eye view of going through trying to get pregnant as well as adoption and the joys of being a family. It was really heartwarming.

Al Roker is a funny, humble, insightful, multi-perspective weatherman. The audio CD falls short in all ways compared with expectations. The "getting pregnant" section may have been personally important to Al's family, but the story was told without humor, insight or depth. The audio delivery was weak, almost flattened like a pancake.

For my next road trip, I'll try a novel, a history of the English language or a sports biography - anything but humor or parenting tips from the weatherman.

With the release of the paperback edition of Al's first writing venture, it reminded me that I HAD read and DO own the hardback copy of "Don't Make Me Stop The Car!". I ran through several of the reviews before sitting down to write mine.
If folks are looking for Fatherhood How To 101 or a scholarly book on the finer points of Parenting...well, you probably will be one of the folks disappointed in this book. If you are just looking for a good read in two areas 1.) Al Roker's humor and 2.)what fatherhood has been to him then this book is for YOU!
It is a relatively short book that is a very easy read. I took it to a doctor's' office appointment to read in the waiting room...Al had me cracking up and howling that I was beginning to get strange looks from others as I snickered with tears running down my face.
The book covers how he and his wife overcame the years of wanting a child...what they had to endure and go through to have and be blessed with a child. Al tells how he had to intergrate a second marriage (step-mom) when he married Deborah to his first daughter and then tell how when the Blessed event happened, how he had to intergate the elation of having a child with Deborah but keep his first daughter involved and know she would still hold a place in their hearts full of love for her. That was a TALL order for Al to be successful at...as it is for any father who has remarried and added another child to the family!
It tells of how he shares the parental duties with Deborah...something that doesn't happen (unfortunately) in every relationship and household. It was refreshing to read what it was like as a participating father from Al's side!
I give this book a strong 4 star rating. Give Al a break...it's his first venture in writing a book and overall it was a good read! Yes, there are places the pace slows down but it happens to the best of writers!
If you simply want a fun, easy, good read on fatherhood with several laughs along the way...BUY THIS BOOK! If you want scholarly on parenting...well, you'll probably be disappointed.
Try it!

What can I say being the first reviewer of this title on Amazon? Apparently, this must not have been a bestseller. I have cataloged the book in humor, but it is really more biographical. Cataloging In Publication is 306.8… whatever that is supposed to mean other than it is wrong. Subject headings are supposed to direct the reading to particular subjects anyhow. I have noticed that CIP people do not know a great deal about cataloging is what I am saying.
Roker is not a James Thurber, but at least he is not a Dave Barry.
So, here I am reading this title, I purchased fifteen years ago, in my old age. I looked Roker up and learned he is still married to Deborah, at least on the date of my web search, and that he was raised Catholic, which explains, to me at least, several of his references to God’s will. For example: The miscarriage was God’s will and the healthy growth of the implanted zygote was God’s will. They were blessed by God to have the finances to proceed with an expensive procedure I would rather not read about… and a country house. How were they going to explain to the baby the two siblings that did not make it… and the one that was apparently dispensed with? Whatever…
The expenditures were annoying and must have been astronomical, at least for my budget. My own daughter, who works for a living, could not afford a modicum, even with her crappy insurance, of such expenditures. So, this stuff is not in God’s will for working folks… The religious aspect reads like a Max Lucado picture book.
He did make a big mistake letting Courtney watch MTV, and I presume, all that other junk. But, she apparently made it through okay.
Food was apparently a big part of Roker’s life, but he has lost substantial weight, at least temporarily, with a gastric bypass.
The chapter, however, on prejudice of racial and other characteristics, although not original, was insightful. Can’t we all just get along? Apparently not.
This is followed by parenting anecdotes at differing levels of humor.
Gotta go.
