I purchased the Doggie Dooley 3000 last August, one year ago, and followed installation and operation directions exactly. The only problem with the install is our sandy soil up here in northern Arizona so the opening at the top was a little wide. To solve that issue, I used a piece of 4’ x 4’ x 1” treated plywood with an appropriate sized hole cut.
We have three small Terriers of about 10 lbs. each that the Dooley was to provide for. Never did. I have tried a lot of what some of the other users have. Same results. Nothing worked. Finally, the sun’s ultraviolet rays here at almost 5000 feet did in the cheap plastic upper shell, which had seen cracking for some months, and was now breaking apart and threatening to fall into the pit.
I pulled the disgusting thing out and set it on the lip to dry for a few days before I toss it. I will backfill the hole with rock and dirt after.
When you think about a private home septic system and how it works (if you don’t know, do a search) and then take a look at the Dooley, it should become obvious that at some point, just like your home, you are going to have solids left in the bottom of the can. Now in the case of your home, you have a professionally designed system with a very large capacity tank (multi-stage) that is designed to be pumped periodically. As for the Dooley, not only is nothing mentioned of this, but you are left to your own devices.
At best, this is poor science and poor design. At worst, it is fraud upon the consumer as it is creating a health hazard.
Not use there enzymes tabs.
Don't add water.
Drill 12 weep holes through the bottom.
And most important! is to use Meal worms to digest the dog waste, you will need about 1000 worms to get this unit working.
The Meal worms can be ordered online or at most pet stores.
At this point I can add all the dog waste from my two dogs with no poop smell at all.
We did do a full 4' hole, even though I am on all sand. Lined the bottom with some pebbles for good measure. Also, I placed bricks around the edge of the hole, just under the rim of the unit, to keep it stable on the ground. Unit was installed in a corner, at the very limits of my yard/hose for 'odor' control ;). As an extra, because I have rather nosey, playfully 'destructive' pups, I put one of those 'no dig' gates across the corner to keep them away from it & me to have easy access.

Install is easy if you use post hole diggers and mark the size of your hole and are able to stay within your mark.Read more
