Osprey's study of the United States' first offensive response to the Pearl Harbor attacks of World War II (1939-1945). In early 1942, the strategic situation was bleak for the United States. She had been in continual retreat since Pearl Harbor, surrendering major areas such as the Philippines, and was preparing for the worst in Hawaii and on the West Coast. In April 1942, sixteen U.S. Army Air Corps B-25 medium bombers were flown off a Navy aircraft carrier 600 miles east of Japan. Their mission was to strike back at Imperial Japan after months of U.S. defeats in the Pacific. Their launch point was at the extreme limit of their ability to reach recovery airfields in China, and the planes were flying into the teeth of Japanese defenses. This is their story...

"The Doolittle Raid 1942" is an Osprey Campaign Series book. Author Clayton Chun, writing from the perspective of 2006, chose to portray the mission as an early example of a joint and combined operation. He walks the reader through the strategic situation that prompted the mission and the details of its planning and execution. The accounts of individual bombing runs give a frightening sense of the hazards faced by the air crews. The author passes lightly over the minimal physical damage caused by the raid in favor of its enormous psychological consequences in Japan and the U.S. The text is much enhanced by a terrific collection of photographs, maps, illustrations, and diagrams.

Chun's narrative is repetitious in emphasizing the effects of the raid. However, there are some good details here, such as the planning glitch that caused the raiders to arrive over China a day earlier than expected, and the carburetor modifications that were undone by last minute maintenance in the states. Overall, this is a good read, and recommended.

I found the book to be a worthwhile study of the raid and its effects, although I would have appreciated more input from the Japanese side as to damage inflicted rather than relying so heavily on the after action debriefings of the air crews.

I started reading soon after the mailman came and spent the afternoon in one place reading from start to finish. A valuable addition to my library. I intend to obtain other Osprey books by Chun, whose writing style, as exemplified by this book, is above the always good Osprey standard.

This is a good factual look at the people, politics, and the military mindset of the day. You will feel pride in these Americans who took on a little propaganda mission and made it one of the more important facets of the War. Wish the author had been able to find more first hand stories.
