The final season of the often bizarre series with its surreal plots and humor finally appears on Blu-ray. The fact that it survived four seasons either indicates someone at Warner either loved the series or it was so low on the radar, no one even realized it was still on. Either way, like its companion series (but quite different in tone) “Teen Titans”, “The Doom Pateol” is an example of YV at its finest.
When we left the team they had figured out a way back from being zombies. They also had to deal with the rampage of Werebutts that were turning others into the creatures. There was one little itsy bitsy problem-one survived and Cliff left it stay frozen in realizing it was still alive.
They also learn about a dark future from a future Vic which they must somehow avoid. It has a devastating impact on humanity.
The fourth season looks as good as the previous three with even more challenges visually compared to those seasons. Could it look better? If Warner chose to put this out in the native 4K it was shot in absolutely. As it is the Blu-ray does improve (due to some streaming limitations) of the broadcast version of the series. Colors vary from darker and muted (due to the episode being shot that way) to eye popping color looking like a kids show. Detail, depth and delineation are all very good to excellent.
Audio sounds quite good with a DTS 5.1 lossless presentation that is very active most of the time.
English subtitles are provided.
Kudos to Warner for not releasing these bare bones (Sony I’m looking at you with “Justified Primeval”) with three brief featurettes (running between two to four minutes depending on the featurette). How could this be improved? How about a doc on the show or a commentary track or two with the creators? Still, again kudos to Warner for A) releasing it and B) at least providing some special features.
So, the saga of The Doom Patrol is concluded for this series. I’m happy Warner chose to close this off with a twelve episode conclusion. Most of the loose ends are tied off here and the stories are, as always, colorful, bizarre and funny. Fans will be pleased.
