"Another Sci-Fi hit for Barth! -- Maurice Rocks!"  -Booksamillion.com review

"This is a cleanly written novel aimed at the coming-of-age youngster... Maurice's world hews closely to the rules of our universe. This is a rare strength, and if you are looking for a novel that teaches as it entertains, you have found it."  -John Cooley, Author: Dear Madman

"One of the best sci-fi books for younger readers in many a year. Dr. Barth's credentials shine through and all the science is impeccable. The action never falters, and the reader is swept along with Maurice to investigate sabotage on an endangered Martian colony.  Highly recommended!"  -Gene Grim: Author: Conversations on a Blackboard

From the Author

The Doomed Colony of Mars is the second book in the Maurice Series.  Mars has always been a favorite planet of mine since I was a boy and I've followed every space probe and investigation of Mars since the days of Mariner-4 in the early 1960's!  The pace of exploration on Mars has never been greater than it is today, so Mars seemed to be the natural setting for the second Maurice book.

With the discovery of large amounts of water on Mars, the possibilities for exploration and colonization became much better.  Although Mars (with water!) has much to offer the explorer, the colonist will still find it a harsh and barren environment that will make everyday life a struggle for the first generations of settlers who choose to make their permanent home on Mars.  This made a story about a Martian colony the perfect vehicle for encouraging the discussion of  development of resources vs. environmental conservation.  The conflicts that trouble Maurice and his friends on Mars in the late 21st century are very much with us here on Earth!

As with Maurice on the Moon, a full classroom curriculum is being written for The Doomed Colony of Mars.

This is an excellent series, and this installment does not disappoint. Maurice is a curious and courageous character and very easy to relate to. Shannon is well-characterized and very sympathetic for girls; not bubbly or boy-crazy, but in for every part of the adventure. The story is compellingly written and raises fascinating and tantalizing possibilities about the space program and the future. It's a great choice for a kid who is bored by narrative but interested in science- they can be sucked in by both here and not disappointed. Wonderfully imaginative and skillfully written, this book can entertain nearly anyone. Don't be shy about introducing thoughtful sci-fi! This is the real thing and the science checks out. What's really out there can be much more interesting than what's been made up.

This is a cleanly written novel aimed at the coming-of-age youngster. Unlike many tales aimed at this age group, there are no appeals to glitz and false popularity. This book, although shot through with the adventure and derring-do that appeals to youngsters, takes its science seriously. There are no miracle inventions out of the blue, no deus ex machina, just solid, reasonable and scientifically accurate technology.
It is no secret that the world is viewed differently by sub and early teens, that they are entranced by adventure writ large, but Barth has made good use of this outlook to explain and explore science and scientific concepts. In contrast to "Star Wars" type of inaccuracies, where spaceships behave like airplanes and make roaring noises, Maurice's world hews closely to the rules of our universe. This is a rare strength, and if you are looking for a novel, for a youngster, that teaches as it entertains, you have found it.

Good writing. This is the second book in the series...but stands alone as a separate read.
He is very accurate and explains the technical parts very well. No miss spells and is a fast easy read.
Good job.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I was impressed with the deft way the author used his characters to explain science facts. I was reminded of the authors I grew up reading. What Robert Heinlein did in his book "Farmer in the Sky", Daniel Barth has reprised in this novel about Mars. It is a fresh look at what is possible with today's technology. It is written in clear language, with scientific concepts explained in a way that makes them easy to understand. While some may say that this is a book for juveniles, I found it appealing because there wasn't any explicit language, or gratuitous sex or violence. I feel like this book will appeal to people of all ages who dream of humanity colonizing the solar system and beyond. It's the stuff that will cause children to dream, and someday those kids will cause this dream to come true.

After reading the first book, two of my sons read this second book, The Doomed Colony of Mars. They both liked it a lot which makes me happy since they are actually learning stuff. I'm not overly thrilled by some of the other books they read which is just for entertainment. They both liked that there is a new character in the book and that they are on a different planet. I don't think they actually realized how different planets were until reading these books. They actually started to quiz us on the differences. Good thing my husband is an engineer!

I was looking for a quality story for my nephew and bought this for him to read while he was visiting me. He had read the first book in the series, Maurice in the Moon, and really enjoyed it. He said this one was every bit as good. After hearing him talk about it, and after having read an article on the Opportunity rover, I figured I'd check it out. While not written for an adult, I was very surprised at not only how good the story is, but how interesting the science in the book is. The author has found a way to make the science the solution to the story and he uses it to solve a series of interesting puzzles. Rare to find a book that works for an adult, is fascinating, and is something a teen loves to read.

Daniel Barth masterfully mixes a child's imagination with grown up facts. When I have children of my own they will be reading this book and the others in the series. I Highly recommend this book to all who love science, young and old.
