Trouble arrives in the form of a militarized group of paramilitary soldiers who represent a ultra-conservative faction who want to return America back to the way it should be. The armed faction conscripts young adults and take them back to their home base in San Diego, They also threaten the Japanese who have businesses in the area and sabotage several of their buildings and blow up one of their vessels. The people are wary of these so called soldiers but are helpless to stop then. But their is hope in the visage of a young teenage girl who wants an end to the last pocket of war minded individuals and will do anything it takes to quell the final reminder of the old ways, even if it's means that she'll have to lead an unarmed crusade down to San Diego.
I found the book to be very fascinating even though it's a bit heavy handed at times. An interesting and well written take on the post-apocalypse genre with a very emotional ending and a weird homage to the "Children's Crusade" of the Middle Ages.
