Product Description
A Note from The Doors' Ray Manzarek: This is the tour that never was. The tour that was supposed to happen when Jim came back from Paris. The tour that we were all eagerly anticipating. In May or June of 1971, Jim called John from Europe and asked him how LA Woman was doing. John told him it was doing great and that the critics actually loved it, too. Jim was excited and wanted to go on the road as soon as he got back to the States. The two of them even talked about taking the bass player - Jerry Sheff - on the road with the four original Doors to duplicate the sound of the LP. Unfortunately, as we all know, on July 3rd, 1971, Jim leapt upward into the loam to join Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix - and the LA Woman tour never happened. We lost a great friend and a great poet, and we never got to play the songs from LA Woman in a live concert setting. But now, finally, we can bring you LA Woman in its entirety! Robby and I as The Doors of the 21st Century, along with Ian Astbury on lead vocals, Ty Dennis on drums and Angelo Barbera on bass, have recorded the complete album and it is here on this DVD for your insight, pleasure, and discovery - and for our completion. Robby, Ian, and I thank you for Jim. We hope he will be pleased. Songs include: Roadhouse Blues, Break On Through, When The Music's Over, Love Me Two Times, Changeling, L'America, Love Her Madly, Down So Long, Hyacinth House, Cars Hiss By My Window, Texas Radio, Riders On The Storm, LA Woman, Light My Fire, Soul Kitchen.

Purists may scoff at The Doors of the 21st Century, but for those who believe in second chances, this concert succeeds as both reunion and revival of one of the greatest rock bands in history. Replacing the late, great Jim Morrison is a daunting task, but the addition of British vocalist Ian Astbury (who bears more than passing resemblance to Morrison) is a risk that pays off surprisingly well during this 102-minute gig, superbly recorded in Houston, Texas, during the band's 2003 world tour. Astbury respects Morrison's legacy, but wisely avoids slavish re-creation of "the Lizard King"'s inimitable style; he's paying affectionate tribute while channeling his own vocal energy into Morrison's poetry. In performing the entirety of the Doors' classic L.A. Woman along with other timeless hits, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger (drummer John Densmore moved on to a variety of solo projects; he's replaced here by Ty Dennis) make good on a 32-year-old promise to give Doors fans the tour that Morrison's death pre-empted, adding what the Doors never officially had: a bass player (Angelo Barbera) to re-create the LP's rhythm section. The band's in excellent form here, so let the naysayers whine; this DVD proves that new Doors are better than no Doors at all. --Jeff Shannon

First off, Ian Astbury isn't Jim Morrison nor tried to act like him. He could have worn leather pants, but didn't and during the jams, he went in the shadows to let the Doors have their moment. I read that John Densmore didn't think Ian was a great singer and that Eddie Vedor was a more suitable choice. I think Eddie Vedor might be too good a singer actually. Ian and Jim have a similar gruff baritone. There were times were he sounded like he was about to bust into some Cult songs! He never stumbled for a second and could see the band enjoyed playing together.
Yeah, it wasn't the original Doors, but damn close. Def. had the spirit and tribute.

It's a shame that Densmore isn't on drums, but it is great to see Robby and Ray performing. These musicians are grand masters and the set they perform is tremendous. Any Doors fan will enjoy every second of their music on this superb DVD.
Overall this is a terrific purchase, Doors fans will love it, and those new to the Doors will find it highly accessible. It is testament to their talent and insight that even today, many decades later, their music and songs are still frighteningly relevant, perhaps more than ever. The world needs the Doors, and I for one am glad to still have them around.
That's something you'll find yourself uttering a few times during the playback of this DVD...
Former members from The Doors Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek team up with Cult vocalist Ian Astbury and take you on a trip such as you haven't been witness to before...
Recorded live in Houston in 2003, the sound and picture quality on this DVD are perfect...
Although the convenience of having Astbury filling the sizeable shoes of Jim Morrison makes for endless debate, don't be put off by the absence of the original Doors shaman and let yourself go... the music and the words are worth your attention...
You already know the music on this set is timeless, but witnessing original Doors Ray and Robby playing it live again, with even more passion (if that's possible) and certainly more skill (Robby has really got better with age) than in the old days is an absolute experience...
The L.A. Woman tracks will get you going just like the first time, if not more...
The intoxicating L'America... a powerful The WASP... The Changeling... the Riders On The Storm trip... need I say more?
Yes! There's more... the menacing When The Music's Over... the fierce Break On Through... Ray and Robby's exchange during Love Me Two Times...
And just when you think you can't take any more... Light My Fire... the groove, the solos...
The EXCITEMENT...
