I use this thing for stretching multiple times a day. I no longer have to pay to get massages! I sometimes use it to hang a bit and build up strength. My goal is that I will one day be able to do a pull-up.
This thing is sturdy, and I have very few complaints. The grip is not as grippy as it could be. It also definitely damages the door frame a removed some paint. That is probably to be expected for something like this though. I've seen others put socks over them but I'm too lazy for that. :P
I am hovering between 243 and 245 pounds, after some research and digging, I decided on this door frame pull-up bar for a few reasons. This doubles as a dip and push up station, it folds cleanly to be hung up in your closet and out of sight. Most of us who are home bound are looking to improve our overall strength gains by any means, since I currently have no access to extra space to build a comprehensible gym, I decided to approach a bit more minimal style. I discarded weights and introduced resistance bands, tubes and body weight regiment. A few things about this door frame pull up bothered me.
One are the notched lock in place covers on the spring loaded arms that pull down on the top frame. the levering in the pull up bar is pretty ideal for a narrow door frame. the rubber grommets flush against the outside frame and the bars have a decent cushion and width to provide sustainable pull up grip and strength.
That being said, the thing slides slightly and rested against my frame in shifts that made me incredibly uncomfortable. While sagging my weight on the pull up bar, the door would whine, the entire bar would shift, but hold. I'd attempt a pull-up or two, but my apprehension in putting in my full strength on the bar always halted me and I never raised myself to a full position. I could not bring myself to pull "up" while the entire pull up bar shifted "down" and into the frame forcing some whining and grunting against the frame of my bedroom door.
I have no doubts that this is not going to rip any boards from the frame, the pull-up bar itself locks in quite nicely. But, I could not help myself from attempting other work-outs advertised in the pamphlet. Another issue is the height. While I can keep both of my feet hovering above the ground, the frames in our home are low to me, so I felt myself shifting to meet my requirements of a decent pull up. The resistance straps are a bit of an after thought. I have some tubes that are similar strength, the locking mechanics of them are decent, but the handles are uncomfortable for larger hands and I cannot feel much in terms of flexible work-outs.
I will be returning the product. For those of you who have a slight frame, roughly 5'5 to 5'7 and under 200 pounds. I would recommend this pull-up bar. If you are 5'9 + I would not recommend this as a stable alternative to what you would find in your local gym. If you are well over 220lbs, I would hesitate to use it at all, if you are more strength orientated and bulking, look elsewhere or purchase a standing pull-up bar or switch to another exercise.
I really wanted to love this thing, setup is a matter of seconds and concealment overall is fantastic. I cannot however, get past my apprehension to go 'all out' in an exercise routine that forces me to halt myself from pushing on the frame of the door hard or trying to sustain my weight by hanging my feet above ground in any meaningful way. Keep in mind your door frame, if you don't hear anything while doing you're pull up, I believe that this would be a great fit for anyone as a beginner to doing pull-ups. Intermediate and advanced lifters using this for bodyweight exercises might want to look elsewhere as the hold and strength on this thing is a bit odd for me to recommend.
