That doesn't happen here, and that alone is refreshing. She is not always likable, she is not always right, but she does the best she can, and that really counts.
Dora's Jinx is a fun, moving story about facing your problems and learning who you are and what is important. Navigating life as a teenage girl and also a witch is difficult, but following Dora on this journey is charming and magical (pun intended!)
This story is way below what I’d choose for myself because it is by far a book for teens. My tastes are more…adult. I tend to shy away from YA also, but I will read them from time to time. With that said, the story itself is good. My first thought was that it reminded me of the tv show “Sabrina the teenage witch,” but thankfully the book did not resemble that tv show other than containing a witch and talking cat. So I got over the comparison fairly quickly. The plot was a little slow and Dora was super insecure, but I think that was the point. You’re taken on a journey of self-discovery and growth. This is a cute book that can be enjoyed by a reader of any age. I liked that the supernatural people remained one kind, meaning witches, but there was a variety of supernatural animals. The writing was well done, as was the editing.
I received this book from the author and Romance Authors that Rock, in exchange for an honest review. This story gets (5) hearts from me.
This was a fun read, set in a detailed, interesting world. Crushes on random guys, reluctant friendships developing into stronger bonds, annoying relatives who do things 'for your own good' that may actually be right are mixed in with life altering decisions, daring rescues, talking cats, and developing magical skills.
It screams for a sequel. *hint hint*
I really like Dora because she struggles with forming her own identity while receiving pressure from family and society. What is expected of her is not what she wants, from how she dresses and the effects that has on those around her, to where and who she is supposed to spend her time around. Thrift store clothes and weird, nerdy, and unpopular friends are things I have in common with her that I wouldn't change for the world.
Dora's Jinx is a book which I would recommend to anyone! I think it is important as it highlights the power and magic of friendship over romantic relationships, which is prevalent in teen fiction today. This will definitely be enjoyable for those on the asexual spectrum as well because it doesn't focus around love/sex/romance like most books.
A lovely, fun tale of a girl looking for her true self, and coming to terms who she really is. I loved the magical elements, and how it combined the more traditional view on witches from fairytales and folklore with modern elements. A quick read, too, and fast-paced. Would recommend this to anyone who enjoys YA Fantasy. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
