Describe your product in 3 words.
Handmade, nature inspired, whimsical.
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
I wanted to apply my art to everyday objects. Pattern is a recurrent element in my artwork. At the time I was paying close attention to the way things grow in nature when not controlled by man. I wanted to translate this to the floral patterns in the tableware. I also wanted it to have the texture of an etching, add a tactile value to the products.
What makes your product special?
I think the fact that there is not only a functional intention but also an aesthetic intention. My beginnings making functional ceramics are very inspired by the Art and Crafts movement. In the words of William Morris: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." That motivation prevails in my creative process and hopefully shows in the product. Also the fact that there is a handmade element that doesn't aim for perfection but rather that each product is a result of human work and struggle.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
All the new unexpected things I have had to learn, and I am still learning, along the process. Many times it is the challenges you face, having to be resourceful and true to your values what makes your work unique and different. Also, one of the most rewarding parts of my work is the contact with customers, the feedback I receive and knowing when the products enter their homes and lives and make them happy.

I do think there is some trickery in the advertising and marketing of these products, which is disappointing, so I wanted to help be clear about what you’re really getting. They are still nice plates, just not a potter’s personal creation.
WHAT YOU GET: 4 beautifully crafted ceramic bowls that are dishwasher and microwave safe. The bowls are 5.25 inches in diameter and perfect for fruit or nuts or just for display. Each is a hand painted a different color (yellow, blue, pink, green) and have a recessed floral pattern.
OVERALL: Beautiful set of ceramic bowls that would make a great gift with a very cool box. They are easy to clean in the dishwasher and you can use them in the microwave!
Let me know if that was helpful!
This would make a gorgeous wedding gift or a present for someone special as it is my opinion one can never have too many mid-size serving bowls. My wife made an artistic salad with the Dorotea as the shallowness of the bowl allows for creative culinary creations. We love the scalloped edges and it also fits a unique niche with it's wide, low profile shape. It comes in lovely super sturdy packaging. As a designer, I love the elegant, playful simplicity of the box and plan on repurposing it.
I highly recommend Dorotea's hand crafted tableware. It's a standout on the counter of my artsy kitchen as both functional dish and artistic conversation piece.
First off - they arrived in perfect condition. The manufacturer's packaging is excellent. In addition to being so good - it's also quite classy. The box is sturdy and very attractive ( almost a presentation box - fancy! ). The packaging actually makes the mugs look even more expensive than they are - it's a nice touch.
I absolutely love the look of the mugs, themselves. They're beautiful. The colors aren't overly bright, but they are nice to look at and the design is adorable. The same design appears on all four mugs with slight variations in color due to being glazed.
The mugs are big - that's a huge cup of coffee or tea - and I like that. Even though the mugs are large, they are still comfortable to hold, and the handle is comfortable around the fingers.
My only exception to a five star rating is that two of the mugs had a very small rough spot on the lip of the mug - likely due to the ceramic glazing being thinner at that spot. This is NOT an issue for us, but I thought I should mention it. That's the only reason for 4 stars in stead of 5 ... This is one of those instances where I wish I could give 4.5 stars, because that would be a better representation of my review.
All in all - I truly love these mugs, and the presentation-like box they come in!
These mugs are made in China.
Microwave and Dishwasher Safe

The piece is okay in the dishwasher and microwave since it a white clay and does not have any or much iron in the clay body. It is probably not safe in the oven. The piece has a very nice profile and a good looking lip.
This piece has an incised design made with a needle tool in the leather hard clay and then oxides, colors, are brushed into the shapes. The color is added either before or after the piece is glazed. When the glaze is fired in the kiln, the oxide becomes part of the glaze and is not like a paint which could come off. There is no need to worry about the food safety of this piece.
The reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 is aesthetic. Since we are potters and have also been involved in hand brushwork, we have our own ideas of design and composition. We do not find the composition and designs to our liking which is certainly a personal thing. The brushwork is nicely done and might appeal greatly to another person.
