This is a great 3 person game and can be played in under 90 minutes easily. My experience is that adding a 4th person really slows down the game and lengthens the playing time considerably. So we usually just play Dos Rios when we have 3 people, and play other games when we have more than that. For 3 people, it's really hard to beat this game.
My husband got this game a few months ago because of the fact it was good for two players and the price was right. This game pleasantly surprised me. The rule book is a little tough to navigate (I would have gone with a different layout), but once we understood the rules we found it to be a highly strategic game, and super fun to dam the river and move it around. Moving the river is a little finicky, but it's a mechanism you don't see in many other games.
The idea of the game is to make money by ensuring you have farmers on fields that are irrigated (have a river flowing through them), and use this money to build houses and a hacienda. You win if you've built all 4 houses and a hacienda, or if you build 3 houses and a hacienda that are all on irrigated lands. To get money, you harvest irrigated fields your farmers are on, and to get more dams you harvest irrigated forests your farmers are on. These dams are important because they allow you to reroute the river to your advantage, so if your opponent built a house or has 3 farmers that would collect money at the end of the round, you can move the river away! The rivers are constantly changing throughout the game, but you're also moving your farmers around and attacking your opponents farmers to scare them back to the city.
It's a really fun game with a lot of strategy involved, but its one flaw is that at some point during most games your opponent (or you) will be so far ahead there's no way to catch up. This makes the endgame a little less interesting in a 2-player game, but in a game with more players this can be mitigated by ganging up on the leader.
Even with this flaw, the game play is exciting and fun, and it's an excellent game for 2 players. The map is randomized each game, which means no two games will be the same and it has a high replay value. I highly recommend this game, especially for the price!
