Hank's predicaments are often funny and sometimes outrageous. There are plenty of chuckles and occasional laugh-out-loud moments. Hank's character becomes more well-drawn as the story progresses. The rest of the supporting characters are well done. Except Lori.
Lori is Mr. Green's administrative assistant. Hank's rent includes having Lori take his phone calls and do some light filing etc. for Hank. Lori's character is never clear. She starts out as a smarmy perfect OCD b***h, who runs the office like a drill sarge and has no respect for Hank at all. Hank doesn't like Lori but he keeps telling her about his case, and ends up relying on her help. She becomes essentially his partner and her character does a complete change. Their relationship is antagonistic and then suddenly they are working together, with little to no development to account for this change.
Then there is elusive Mr. Green. He never makes an appearance in the story and Lori seems to cover up for his absence. I thought that this would work into the story in some way; perhaps Lori is actually Mr. Green. Perhaps there is no Mr. Green but he's a cover for Lori's real job (whatever that is). Maybe Lori is a PI too, as she's very adept at finding information and figuring ou clues. I thought this mystery was an opportunity that was never taken advantage of.
I really didn't like the end. Hank and Lori end up in a liplock in the last sentence. I could see an attraction developing over the course of a couple more books (after all, this is a series), but even the level of cooperation that they developed as the book progressed didn't prepare me for their sudden passion for each other. I found it a disappointing cop-out.
I did enjoy the book. It's light, funny, and just crazy enough to keep reading. I'd read more by this author.
