Background: I am an experienced tent camper based in Denver, previously from the Midwest. I've been thinking about giving hammock camping a try for a while, but, due to familiarity with tents and what I considered to be a learning curve associated with hammocks, as well as what I thought to be a considerable expense to get gear that I may not like and have wasted. I started casually looking at hammocks and accessories and found that, with a couple exceptions, the gear was really affordable.
The gear was so affordable, in fact, I decided to try a variety of brands and price points to determine where the real value is. I purchased a familiar known brand double hammock for $99.99, this Golden Eagle Outdoors Double and its accessory tree straps at their 40% off opening sale price of $35 and $18 respectively, and a value brand double that came with tree straps for $19.
The Results: First, to speak about hammocks. Experienced hammock users will already know the advantages of hammocks in backpacking/camping situations. Ask any of them and they will tell you all about it. Tent campers that don't prefer hammocks can outline the cons for you. See the debate on many forums. I will say that, for some situations, I would not trade my tent for a hammock. On the other, I definitely see that in most situations, the hammock's merits cannot be matched. Things that a good hammock (at any price) can do for you include being way more comfortable (IMHO) than any way you can sleep on the ground other than large, heavy, and/or expensive sleeping pads, doubling as a very cool, comfortable camp chair/couch, reduce pack space/carry weight to less than a single person/bivey style tent (which is so incredibly great for a long day hike that has a nap planned in the middle. I totally endorse this) . Also, deployment is easy and incredibly fast, think nearly effortless. These are advantages in the field. Add to these the backyard (or anywhere) deployment of these fun, comfortable, easy, fast loungers, and my only question is "why doesn't everybody own these things?". More about hammocks: again, see forums.
Now, what all the hammocks I tried have in common are that they are hammocks (JK). All were made out of "parachute" nylon. All utilized non-life safety kern/mantle cordage as the attachment points, all utilized non-life safety carbiners. They all had the same dimensions and weigh approximately 19oz.
The differences start to emerge in the details. The "parachute" material of the least expensive hammock was different than the other two. Silkier in finish and a bit stretchier, the load rating per the manufacturer is lower. The lower load capacity is certainly the impression the material gives. The cordage seems lighter as well. The straps that comes with hammock (can be ordered for slightly less without straps) are standard flat 1.5" web. They do not stretch under the max load rating for hammock, nor would I have expected them to. They have 3 daisy chain loops that seem reasonably stitched considering the system rates at 275 lb. load. I think it is important to recognize that the physics of moving a "live" load in and out of the hammock, as well as simply swinging (as happens in a hammock), increases the forces placed on the material that exceed the weight of the person using it. Also, most manufacturers acknowledge that double hammocks don't actually comfortably sleep two people. Good for a snuggle, but no good for sleeping. Do the math and 275 lb rating doesn't really work for two adults, sleeping, cuddling, or sitting (at least not considering the physics).
When it comes to the the Golden Eagle Outdoors and the well known competitor that costs nearly 3x as much, the differences were impossible to see. Stout parachute nylon that projects incredibly more confidence than the lower end stuff, comfortable but less stretchy. The stitching of these two are correct, triple stitched at weight bearing seams, strait lines, no missed stitches, no broken thread, overlap where appropriate. The quality control difference is obvious between these and the lower end. They are both comfortable and inspire confidence, completely indistinguishable. Both have a 400 lb max. capacity. The Golden Eagle Outdoors hammock comes with two additional lengths of cordage to enhance the speed and ease of set up and adjust the span between anchor points. The expensive competitor warrants their product to be free from manufacturer's defect for a period of 2 years, the Golden Eagle Outdoors hammock is warranted for 5 yrs.
I also purchased the Golden Eagle Outdoors tree straps. These are super tough 2" flat web with a plethora of daisy chains. Using them in the most random of spots, I was able to find two suitable anchors in an otherwise void landscape and deploy the hammock appropriately at a 30 degree strap angle in less than 90 seconds thanks to the multitude of adjustment possibilities. They are super robust and foster the higher weight rating with extremely over-built zeal.
The Final Word: While there are some pretty obvious differences between the high and and bargain hammocks, Golden Eagle Outdoors is currently delivering a premium product that matches the top quality manufacturers for a fraction of the price. You really can't beat the value. Hammocks for the whole family for the price of one of the high end competitors!
More Notes: Matt at Golden Eagle is awesome. Quick response to all questions. Right now, this cool start up is offering their hammocks at significantly reduced prices which won't last forever. They have accessories in the pipeline. Coming soon: Rain Fly, Bug Net, Inflatable Pillow, and possibly new color options.
I also subsequently got Eagle Outdoors Single hammock to compare and for the kids. The fact is, I can't tell yet which I like more. For just hanging around, it offers a better view. Less room and material to surround yourself in (which I like when sleeping), also packs smaller and weighs less. For my 4', 50 lb son, it fits him the way the double fits me at 5'10", 200 lbs. I was equally comfortable in both.
If you have questions, post them and I will answer...love a good product. Happy Hammocking!
Update: I have had it for many months now. I have had many good times on my own balcony with this hammock, but I decided to put a cotton hammock out there instead because this is so light weight, it makes the perfect travel hammock. I was surprised to see this as a lightning deal, just as I was posting my review update. I thought it was a steal when I was $40, it definitely is one now and $27 -- grab it up! By the way, it is definitely a durable double hammock. Managed to fit myself, my boyfriend, and 45 pound dog in it, nothing broke. We weigh probably 350 pounds together. you can see the pictures from our actual camping trip – we ended up putting a mosquito net over it, and it fit fine. Oh yeah, and it cleans and dries really well, too – We had a heavy rainstorm, everything got filthy, we just hosed this off and hung it up to dry, it was good as new and ready for stuffing back in the bag in no time. Many fun times to be had with this bad boy!
Great quality and no apparent short cuts in components or build. Perfect for a quick at home or away camping/cabin nap/lounge/sleeper. Works especially well with inexpensive ($11 ea Amazon) off-road winch tree saver's as a means to span various tree distances, while protecting the tree's while providing a very secure "mounting" platform using the factory provided nylon tie-off's.
The attached side pouch (doubling as a handy storage pocket for the hammock and ropes) fits a water bottle, flashlight and your phone in a pinch.
I don't know how comfortable two would actually sleep together overnight (but you could if you had no other choice) and certainly/easily a fun napping set-up for two, or better yet using two of the hammocks for a fun side by side setup, (that achieved with a couple of lateral ropes, 2x4's or tree poles to allow "together" fun ...kids would love it and especially when two are used by a couple for a little more restful bivouacking.
That said, it still is a great bonus feature as far as the hammock's width size. It is large/wide enough to cocoon yourself when used singularly for warmth and/or bugs, or you can "gather-up" the sides of the hammock and either hang your legs, arms or all arms and legs over the soft rounded edges for added comfort/support. The gathered material creates a padded perch rather than the more typical thin and constricting sling like most of the smaller hammocks.
