The build quality is a little suspect; I had a button pop off my third day wearing it, but it's the bottom button, and I probably should have been unbuttoning it when i sat down, so I take partial responsibility for this. More importantly, this coat is absolutey not going to keep you warm below 45 degrees, and it's only suitable for that temperature if you're wearing multiple layers underneath. In NYC, it's a good coat for September/October and March/April. But, hey, it's super cheap, and considering how hard it is to buy anything that looks good and has a tailored fit, I still recommend it.
My brother gave me the 920 Black model, which is actually a grey, herringbone pattern. I've always loved herringbone, and this looked fantastic. Yes, it had a factory-plastic smell about it, but a few cold washes did away with the odor.
Despite this being a "wool" coat, the material is quite thin with minimal padding (if any at all), but is fully lined. Excellent for layering -- in the fashion sense -- without sweating up a storm. Not so great for battling extreme cold weather, for which I suggest getting a true peacoat for function. This coat will do nicely for the autumn season & perhaps early winter.
There is a cotton-mix collar insert that is secured by buttons. Not a full lining -- more like a veneer of sorts -- but it does the job of blocking out the wind near the neck/chest area that the coat exposes. The only time I've used it is when I was at an outdoor restaurant by the beach for dinner, and I was perfectly comfortable despite the wind & colder weather coming in.
If you're expecting the collar to stiffly stand at attention, don't -- the collars are pretty flappy. But that shouldn't discourage you from considering this coat: since the collars reach the shoulder epaulets, the epaulets physically hold up the collar so they're not flat on the shoulder. Also, the collars don't collapse on their own -- at least not in my own experience. If you really want the collars to stand up, I suggest starching them (as that is regular practice for clothing companies prior to shipping coats with high collars to retail stores). Personally, I like how it is naturally relaxed, and it does shield my neck from the wind.Read more ›
Also make sure you size right for a coat. It's an over-coat too, err a size or two up from normal.
I have to start by saying i bought the beige one, and its color is actually a little bit darker than the image shows.
It is 35% wool and 65% rayon. It had a strong new smell, and it can only be dry washed, so i'm taking it to a professional cleaner.
Fits me good, looks very good and professional. Though you will need to stitch the buttons, which is simple. Reason being that they are loose.
Overall good impression. Just hoping i can get rid of the new smellines of it.
Though beware that this is not a coat for winter (I live in Europe, so it's cold), more like spring or fall. If you want to use it in the winter, you need to wear a longsleeved shirt, then shirt and a v- neck. (And a tie to look like a cool business man)
Those were my initial thoughts receiving it today. Whether I would order, if I knew these things, probably.
2. Style. Love it. This coat looks fly as all get-out.
3. Fabric. Not my favorite. Kind of a thin felt material. Still, *well* within 5-star range—for the price. My only caveat is as follows: this is not a coat to keep you warm.
All in all, I highly recommend this coat.
