He is very clever because he has managed to write an entire diary, not only type it out but make it fun, entertaining and quirky! We see the world from his view point .. all the things humans take for granted don’t necessarily compute for a dog.
I particularly liked the parts where he had his ‘doggie’ bits removed, commented on The Archer’s going downhill and peeing for England to one gentleman’s disgust. Dougal is an adorable scamp and the author evidently cherishes his every move and was happy to share, it’s a book to lift your spirits.
I must confess I am a cat person so to my untrained eye it was quite an eye-opener some of the mischief he got up to, possibly making me giggle and relish it more because I won’t have to pick up the pieces lol.
Not sure if it is aimed at any specific age group but generally I think it can be read on many levels and each generation can take something from it, maybe a nice book to curl up with grandma with if you are little. Thanks to the author and Brook Cottage Books for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion. If I could award a rating for the photos of Dougal he would score 10/10
Dougal's diary entries are extremely funny at times and I found myself remembering similar things my own crazy hound got up to as a puppy............and at times still does. I could totally empathise with the fox poo incident and the losing more socks to a hungry pup than I could count!
I read extracts from the book to my daughter who found Dougal's story totally hilarious and she fell in love with him immediately demanding we get a Dougal! I'm not quite sure my nerves could cope! An endearing book full of laughs and OMG moments! I'm now looking at my own four legged furry friend in a whole new light!

His long-suffering owner, known firstly as The Boss and then “TD” (Top Dog), knows some great characters. There’s heavily-asthmatic Mrs King, a gin-loving neighbour; Jacks, a lodger with the TV on all day who “shouts down the phone from dawn to dusk”; and Alan the vet, with whom Dougal enjoys a tricky relationship. Alan charges £600 for clearing an intestinal blockage. TD is “overjoyed until she heard the cause of my obstruction – a sock, a very expensive sock.” Dougal’s often scruffy appearance is a running theme. As TD shops for books, two men mistake him for a sheep. He can visualise the “atrocities of the abattoir, taste the Dougal-style lamb with mint sauce.” He adds: ‘Before I could raise the alarm, TD appeared swinging a bag of books, confirmed I was a sheep and, without an ounce of sympathy, yanked me away.” A great holiday read – especially for dog lovers.
