You really can't ask for a better overview of Western swing's infancy than the 99 tracks that compose Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys. The bargain-priced four-CD set begins with the Fort Worth Doughboys' 1932 "Sunbonnet Sue" and ends 15 years later (and musically worlds apart) with Hank Thompson's "Humpty Dumpty Heart" as Western swing gives way to its honky-tonk cousin. What's in between? Plenty of country music evolution, new instrumentation (the pedal steel), and a handful of big-name artists (Milton Brown, Bob Wills, Spade Cooley). But the real highlights are the rare tracks you won't hear anywhere else. Shelly Lee Alley's "Women Women Women" is indebted to the blues and features solo turns from both a steel guitar and clarinet. The Crystal Spring Ramblers' "Fort Worth Stomp" bridges the gap between ragtime and rock, and Porky Freeman's "Boogie Woogie Boy" features a young Merle Travis on guitar. With a great price and stellar liner notes, this set is a steal. --Jason Verlinde
