One of the major conflicts in all these sports-themed books is closeted versus out. In this book, Zach is closeted but chooses to come out fairly easily and early in the book. I wasn't sure where the tension and drama would come from after that. Some of the drama stemmed from Zach being assigned a photographer (for a reality TV show) that he happened to have a past with. But even that ends up getting resolved rather quickly. By around 50% I was wondering what could possibly happen with the rest of the book. There was a big kerfuffle over how the team (and Zach) would be portrayed on the TV show. There were allusions to all the 'junk' you'd expect from lame 'scripted' reality TV. But that part was just not that interesting. I knew the MCs were going to be together; that was obvious. (And YAY!) But by about 60% I just kept looking at the clock, looking at the percentage left and thinking about other books on my kindle. So....yeah, it was good but it wasn't the best Sloan Johnson book I have ever read.
I actually found many of the supporting characters were more interesting here than either of the main characters were. I'd love to read more about Lincoln & Nixon (which looks like it's probably the next book), and I'm curious to see if she will go with Desi deShawn too.
In the end, this book felt like it was just a link between the Home Runs series and the new Wilmington Breakers series without having any of the great passion that we've seen before. It was good, but not great.
Reflecting back to the Homeruns series (from which this is a spin off) I realised that of the six books in that series, I only fully read three (books 1, 2 & 6), didn't read book 3 and did not finish books 4 and 5. Book 1 of this series fails to reignite the passion that I found in books 1 and 2 of the Homeruns series.
In this one, right from the start, both Zach and his ex-boyfriend Griffin (now reality TV cameraman assigned to cover Zach for a pro football series), come across as cold, at least at first. Ironically, while this is supposed to be Zach's book, it really is all about Griffin, who emerges as the real deal and holds your attention and sympathy throughout.
He's the one who kept me reading--and it took me four months of picking and choosing when I would continue. This one has all the hints of a sequel involving two other, older, characters, and ironically I feel that one may be worth looking at. As for Zach and Griffin, I wish them love and luck.
