Down In The Delta: Music From
Review
One of the best things about multiartist soundtracks is the opportunity for creative pairings that otherwise might not happen. It's also common that an abundance of superior talent won't necessarily yield spectacular results. It works both ways here. -- USA Today
[The soundtrack] relieves the usual gooeyness with inventive lyrics, fleet melodies, and spare performances. -- Entertainment Weekly

- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2012In 1998, the independent film company Miramax released the motion picture "Down In The Delta". It was an urban film that was not quite like any other. For starters, it was notable for being the first and only film directed by poet Maya Angelou. Also, the film had big names attached to the project- such as Alfre Woodard, Loretta Devine and Wesley Snipes (who was one of the producers of the film). The film also starred "Good Times" sitcom actress Esther Rolle in her final film roles before her death later that year. The film was based around an elderly woman who sent her drug addicted daughter and her children to live with her brother in law. The trouble was that she had no intention of being near him, primarily due to the fact he lived in rural Mississippi. While not a success at the box office, the film received critical acclaim.
The soundtrack to the film was much more overlooked. Virgin Records America released the album with a who's who in urban adult contemporary and Delta blues. There are a few old songs on here, such as Janet Jackson's "God's Stepchild"- which was a leftover from her album "The Velvet Rope". Luther Vandross teams up with Cassandra Wilson and Bob James on "I'm Only Human", which previously appeared on his lone release for Virgin "I Know". A couple of older songs rounding out the album were Sweet Honey In The Rock's "Patchwork Quilt" as well as the DJ Quik produced Tracie Spencer ballad "The Rain". The newer songs on here are the highlights of the soundtrack. D'Angelo does an excellent cover of the Ohio Players' ballad "Heaven Must Be Like This". Boyz II Men vocalist Shawn Stockman delivers the ballad "Just A Little Love", while The O'Jays singer Eddie Levert duets with his sons Levert members Gerald and Sean on "Where Would I Be". However, the album's best song is the duet between Hi-Five lead singer Tony Thompson and songwriter Antoinette Roberson on the ballad "We Belong Together". Overall, the "Down In The Delta" soundtrack was a great album that didn't get much attention during its initial release. If there was any soundtrack that deserved to be heard by the masses, it was this one.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2009Sometimes when a record company/executive producer tries to combine two different artists from different musical genres to accompany a movie, it usually is a recipe for disaster. I'm glad that it wasn't the case with Down in the Delta, the soundtrack to the movie of the same name starring Alfre Woodard..
Featuring an international "who's who" in R&B, alternative, blues and jazz, it (like some other soundtracks) goes well hand-in-hand with the movie.
It kicks off with Sunday (featuring the one and only Whitney Houston) with "Believe in Love", a churchy-esque song with a very positive message. A surprise to me was D'Angelo's smooth jazz remake of the Ohio Players' "Heaven Must Be Like This". The lineup keeps it coming with songs by Sounds of Blackness, Chaka Khan, Keb'Mo and Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Stevie Wonder, Shawn Stockman (of Boyz II Men), Janet Jackson, Jazzyfatnastees and the Roots, Cassandra Wilson, Bob James, legendary saxman and movie composer Stanley Clarke, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Eddie Levert (of the mighty, mighty O'Jays), Tracie Spencer and R&B husband & wife hit-making duo, Ashford & Simpson. It also features some songs by the late R&B all-stars Luther Vandross, famed brothers Gerald and Sean Levert and Tony Thompson (the lead singer of Hi-Five).
Production was done by Prince, Scott Storch, Gregory D. Hines, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and California rapstar/producer, DJ Quik.
Though underappreciated (like the movie was), it's a must-have with the Love Jones and Waiting to Exhale soundtracks.
I highly recommend the soundtrack and the movie. Thumbs up!

She's not credited but she sings with Sunday, but also Stevie Wonder and the rest of the album is really worthy
David SpanswickReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 20125.0 out of 5 stars an amazing soundtrack collective
This soundtrack from the very rare, rarely seen, film directed by Dr. Maya Angelou is one of those rare items that has become a stand alone album in its own right. It showcases many contemporary soul and blues artists that reflect the mood and tenor of the film. Indeed I was surprised when I listened that many of the songs were included in the film. It is that kind of film and the music seamlessly gives emphasis to the drama on the screen.
The music credits read like a who's who of the best in the current African American music industry ~ Stevie Wonder, Me'shell N'Degeocello, Luther Vandross, Cassandra Wilson,Chaka Khan, Stanley Clarke to name but a few.
I play this regularly as it has not only a joyful emphasis but so many good tunes, foot-tappingly danceable music!!
Give it a try
