This book truly surprised me since I wasn't expecting too much out of it. But it was all I could have asked for. It was funny, it was witty, made me laugh so hard at some times, but there was seriousness in it and deep issues that tore my little heart appart. The characters just grew under my skin and I fell in love with them from the start.
Jocelyn - she was not your typical girl, looking for love and the prince in shining armor, just the opposite. She was such a badass, independent, strong and witty from the outside, but I instantly knew that was a cover for her true inner stuggle. And it was. The more you get to know her, the more you see how vulnerable and broken she was. She claimed she didn't want a relationship of any kind, well...she didn't...until him ;)
Braden - OMG he was simply swoon-worthy. Such a dirty talker and his behavior was a bit too alpha bounding with caveman at places, but he was such a caring, loving and patient person...sigh...
Their banter throughout the whole book was off the charts - funny and witty - it really made me laugh every time they started bikering with each other. And those little fights just led to hot, explosive, steamy scenes that were intense but really powerful to read. Because little by little they opened up to each other and the physical gave way to so much more that simply stole my breath!
The writing was exceptional. It was a combination of emotions going one after another till the very end. I have a thing for an author who could manouver so well between feelings and evoke in you a hurricane of emotions. This one surely did and I can't wait to meet the rest of the gang of this series ;)
P.S. It was touching the way that the various men in Jo's life (Braden, Uncle Mick, Cam) were instantly ready to (and did) leap to her defense in the situation with her father, and the way that they plus Joss and Olivia really supported her emotionally.
I liked the story. I was not real crazy at first about Jo's way of securing a future for her brother and herself. But after reading farther into the story, and realizing everything she did was to ensure her brother grew up in a safe and controlled environment, I still didn't care for it, but I did understand it. And I was extremely happy that she gave up that vision when she met Cam.
And finally went for something, and someone that was good for her.
Cam has issues of his own. There is "insta-lust" when they first lay eyes on each other. But Cam knows exactly what she is and why she is with her current boyfriend, and does not fail to call her out about it. He also calls her several other colorful, unflattering names. Not to mention jumping to conclusions based on her looks and actions. But deep down he's a good guy. Very caring, and a bit of a romantic. He does have one instance later in the book, that he and everyone else plays off as nothing. It made Jo second guess his intentions toward her and it would have thrown up red flags to me as well.
He does redeem himself, and the book ends happily, with a sneak peek into the next book.
