If you ever get married, remember my name: Max Henderson. In my line of work, you acquire a certain perspective on supposedly everlasting unions . . .
- Pre-nups are your friend.
- The person you married is not the person you’re divorcing.
- And I hope you didn’t spend much on the wedding because that was one helluva waste of hard-earned cash, wasn’t it?
But some guys are willing to take a chance. Like my brother, who thinks he’s going to ride off into the sunset with the woman of his dreams in a haze of glitter on unicorns. And the wedding planner—the green-eyed beauty who makes a living convincing suckers to shell out thousands of dollars on centerpieces—is raking it in on this matrimonial monstrosity.
The thing is, Charlie Love is not unlike me. We’re both cogs in the wedding-industrial complex. As the best man, I know her game—and I can play it better than her. But after one scorching, unexpected kiss, I think . . .
I might just want to get played.

About the author

Originally from Ireland, USA Today bestselling author Kate Meader cut her romance reader teeth on Maeve Binchy and Jilly Cooper novels, with some Harlequins thrown in for variety. Give her tales about brooding mill owners, oversexed equestrians, and men who can rock an apron, a fire hose, or a hockey stick, and she’s there. Now based in Chicago, she writes sexy contemporary romance with big-hearted guys and strong heroines - and heroes - who can match their men quip for quip..

The banter and sexual tension live up to expectations. How could they not when pitting a wedding planner against a divorce lawyer? Both main characters are confident and strong willed, so don’t easily cede control.
Charlie Love is the absolute perfect name for a wedding planner and specifically this heroine, although she is a bit of a contradiction. “Charlie” is her direct, a bit prickly, quick to call BS side looking for just a good time while “Love” is the romantic looking to settle down with her HEA. I quite liked her, but sometimes had trouble equating the two sides were the same person.
Max Henderson definitely fits the part of the ruthless; marriage is a trap, divorce lawyer. He and I didn’t jive for most of the book. His brand of cockiness, need for control, and need to be the center of attention is a bit much for me. Although I must admit that by the time he finally owned up to his feelings, I had warmed up to him a little.
Surprisingly, there is plenty of action throughout the story, just not of the steamy variety I’ve come to expect in a Kate Meader book. I missed that. A lot.
I suppose the side story involving Charlie’s parents is necessary for the development of the storyline. For me it cast a negative, almost depressing pall that dimmed my enjoyment. Our age and status are eerily similar, which could explain its effect on me.
Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope; Kate Meader is a favorite, auto-buy author; so I expected to love this story. I wanted to love this story. But it just didn’t gel for me or touch me like the author’s previous books. That’s likely my issue, not hers. I’m looking forward to book two, and fully expect it will contain that Meader magic I’m used to.
3.5 Stars
Max and Charlie’s story might have been your run-of-the-mill, opposites attract, enemies to lovers story, if not for the magnificent characters this author excels at creating. I love that Charlie, with her heart eyes and Disney dreams, still has residual anger issues and feels like she has to reveal herself to her potential mate in pieces for fear of being less lovable for her traits (relatable). I love that self-assured, solid Max couldn’t care less about those anger issues, and in fact celebrates her fire. I love even more that words are so important to him, as rarely do we get to see what makes a smooth talking lawyer so, well, smooth. It’s the little things, you guys.
Also her strength? Making you care for her excellent secondary characters, and writing beautiful relationships, be it between friends or family. I already love the zany, outrageously British Lucas, and want to see beneath the surface of calm, reserved Grant and his broken heart. The parents, and even Cujo, are just icing on this perfectly delish cake. Now I’ll have the other stories please, and thank you 😛
I know a lot of people, including myself most of the time, don’t want predictable stories, but I actually enjoyed that it was predictable without being dull and/or familiar. Could I figure out the long play of the story? Sure, but it was the excitement of the journey and the development of the characters that really drew me into this story. I really enjoyed the Emma Chase feel of Max’s POV. It was like he was telling his story to me specifically and doing so with a ton of charm and character. Was he a bit of a jerk, sure but once you made it past that surface stuff, he was all cuddles and romance.
I’m also a big fan of how the conflict between Max and Charlie was realistic and not over the top dramatic. I think it says a lot when an author can make you feel the intensity between two characters without having to emotionally devastate me as a reader.
All in all, this was a fantastic start to a new series. I’m really looking forward to hearing more from the secondary characters but I’m especially excited for a particular second chance romance. If I’m reading the foreshadowing correctly.

Max is a divorce attorney he is good at his job and loves it. He sees the down side of love and considers himself a realist especially after his own failed engagement.
Though they’re completely at odds, when Max meets his brother’s gorgeous wedding planner Charlie he knows he’s fighting a losing battle... Max and Charlie had a crazy push and pull that was very entertaining and kept me swiping... I found myself laughing during their exchanges, cheering when sparks flew and falling head over heels for Max – he may be a cynic on the outside, but inside lives a romantic...
This was such a cute story with plenty of humour, steam and sweet moments. I loved how perceptive Max was. These two were so perfect for each other. This is one of those books that make you smile. 4.5 Stars.
