The Downfall of Pompeii
Players 2-4
Ages Suggested 10 and up
Time: 30-45 minutes

The Downfall of Pompeii is another great game from Mayfair Games. The object of the game is to get as many of your "relatives" out of the city of Pompeii before lava engulfs the entire city. Rather than give you a play by play of the game we are simply going to highlight some of the mechanics involved. We do have a brief video review as well. Find this after the review below.

There are four phases of the game. First you move your "relatives" into the city. This is done by through simple deck mechanics. You draw a card with a number on it and place you pieces in the corresponding building. This will continue for a few times around the table until you pull the first Vesuvius (A.D. 79) card. When this card is drawn the volcano is beginning to get a bit agitated. This also bring you into phase 2 of the game. Now when you place your pieces you can also invoke the Relatives Rule which allows you to bring more people into the city at a time.

Remember the object is to get as many people outside the city walls by the end of the game as possible, so you will want to start with as many as you can. You will also now begin to see Omen cards. These cards allow you to and I quote from the directions "pick another players piece and throw it into the volcano." This is unusually satisfying. Continue around the table placing pieces and feeding the volcano until you pull the second Vesuvius (A.D. 79) card. You now put away all of the cards and begin to try to rescue your relatives. You have a bag of lava tiles you will being to place in the corresponding places on the board. If a piece is placed in a space that has pieces on it, they to get thrown into the volcano.

This is a fun and easy game to play. Played it in my gaming group and we played it 2 times. The first game was really fast, the second volcano card came up early so we did not have much time to get our people on the board to have them escape in time. The second time we played it was way more fun. Trying to stop other players from winning was a lot more strategic. The randomness of the game makes it's playability endless. Highly recommenced.

There are enough good reviews here so I'll just throw in my opinions. First off, the box says 8+, I disagree. I taught my five year old boy how to play in 15 minutes by the third game he needed little to no help (other than some minor people placement issues), and by the fifth game he had beaten me with some pretty clever lava tile placement. Anyway, the game is a ton fun, has basically a six page, well laid out rule book and so far has infinite replay value for me and my son. A lot of people are put off by the complexity of Euro games but I can assure you this is not one of them. My son is so amped on this game that when I come home from work he points a finger and announces, "You Sir, Are going into the volcano, MU-WHAHAHAHA".

This is just plain fun. We got it after we saw a special exhibit on Pompeii at a science museum. The directions explaining the three stages of the game are clear, and it works well for adults and kids. I play with my 8-year-old; I try to use strategy and he doesn't, and we each win about equally often. You can play with "nice" lava, which avoids people, or "vengeful" lava, which takes out the other players, or whatever you find entertaining. The game is relatively quick - 15 to 20 minutes. It does take a little time to set up the cards at the beginning, so I always sort the cards by type at the end of the game to speed up setup the next time we play.

This game is played in two parts. After playing the game 4 times; the game feels repetitive. The placing of the citizens becomes routine. Running from the lava stage is more fun and more varied. I think the game will start collecting dust! We all liked dropping citizens into the volcano!

This is a fantastic two person game. My husband and I like to play games together after our children are in bed, and this is a quick and easy game to learn and play. A normal game, between the two of us, runs about 30 minutes.

The first play through takes a while as the rules don't quite make sense, but once everyone has the hang of it, this is a nice quick game and a lot of fun. Nothing like getting lucky and killing your friends people.

This game is simple and addictively fun. At first, it's all about strategy worker placement. Drop people into houses, maximize siblings. Then the lava comes and where all hell breaks looks. Find the nearest exists, start moving your workers as fast as possible... until the lava tiles get you!
