So we have searched for reading materials that would engage and interest our daughter in doing alot of reading, so that she could "catch up" to the new shcools higher standards. The Disney Fairy Series, and Disney Princesses Series have really caught her attention, and she loves reading these books. She is quickly making progress as well.
Each book takes about 30 - 45 minutes or so to read, which is perfect. One our daughter starts reading one of these books, she can't put it down. She has a short attention span, like most kids her age, and he books the teacher was ending home were not engaging her, and she would start fiddling around, and lose focus. These do a much better job of keeping her interested.
If anyone else has a 2nd grade girl trying to improve her reading, I would highly recommend you buy this series of books.
She is really improving and I think much of it has to do with this group of books. The stories are cute and hold their interest, the artwork is fabulous and the authors write on level, as noted for each book, but include some new challenging concepts. I will continue to boy these for many more of my grandchildren !!
She loves Tinkerbell movies and this book is great because we get to meet "Hem", a sewing fairy that is very excited to make her own very special dress for a Purple Moon Ball. But all of the fairies (who you'll recognize if you've seen the movies) want her to make their dresses too, and she does, leaving little time for herself to make her own dress. She decides not to give up and make her dress anyway with little time to spare. It's pretty sweet, with a good overall message.
It takes about 10-15 minutes for my daughter to read to us before bed. I highly recommend this book.
"A Dozen Fairy Dresses" is categorized as a Step 4 reader, recommended for Grades 2-3 (but might also suit younger readers who are gaining fluency). This involves reading on one's own (though it can certainly be read to a child)and there are longer paragraphs. The sentences are longer in this book (being a Step 4 book), but they are easy enough to deal with for a child who has advanced through the Step One, Two, and Three series of readers. These books have really helped my daughter improve her reading fluency and I can see her confidence in reading increase.
Visual learners who love seeing illustrations in their books will also adore this series of readers as they are filled with colorful illustrations. This particular title contains beautiful illustrations of the fairies of Pixie Hollow and their surroundings. The story focuses on a sewing talent fairy and how she helps sew clothes for her fairy friends, neglecting to sew one for herself. The engaging characters and easy to follow plot make this a wonderful reader for children who are improving their reading fluency.
